Rear sway-bar mount problems
 

OK, I bought into the Smart Racing Products sway bars. Beautiful hardware, and good instructions. The front bar installs textbook perfect. The back is not so fun...

I have a '77 930 with the 4-speed box. The new rear sway bar is a tube that runs straight across from mount to mount, but I can't insert it with the engine/transmission installed because it wants to occupy the same space as the rear "lip" on the forward transaxle mount bar (the one bolted to the bottom of the nose of the gearbox).

Any suggestions what to do? I've thought of several things, but don't want to screw anything up permanently...

1. grind the crap out of the engine / tranny mount bar so it's out of the way;

2. bend the lip up and out of the way without grinding it off???;

3. add spacers under the sway bar mounts to push the bar "just far enough to the rear" to avoid the interference;

4. go back and read the instructions?

5. give up and just use the front bar?

Anyone have a better idea:confused: I'd really appreciate it!

This is a common issue for ALL aftermarket bars used on 930's and its SOP to resolve this with your # 3 solution; Spacers.

I've always made some .25 thick aluminum spacers from 7075-T6 and drilled 2 holes in each one to move the swaybar mount down enough to clear the crossmember. I hard anodize them black so they look nice and improve durability.

Thanks, Steve. I had assumed this would work, but wasn't sure how far you could go without lowering the bars to the point they start hanging up on driveways (or stray pedestrians :D ).

I should be able to cobble something up pretty easily - unless you have some spares hanging around you want to unload?

I would also suggest you call Smart Racing Products and speak to them about it. It's good to keep the supplier involved,..... good for everyone.

I agree. I like those guys, as they actually design everything they put together. It was just 11PM, they were closed, and this Board never sleeps!
