Brake rod???

I am rebuilding my pedal cluster and I noticed in the "101 projects" book a gold rod coming from the brake. With some reseach it looks like a brake rod. I have a 1974 coupe that does not have this piece. Can someone give me some info on what it does, do I need it, and what does it connect to on the top end?? thanks

your 74 doesnt have this piece. it is only on the SC's. we have master cylinders directly behind the pedal cluster, therefore no brake rod.
