Targa Top

My 91-C2 has a targa top that is perfect. In the interest of keeping it that way I would prefer not to use it. Can anyone recommend a replacement top? The car is a Sunday driver so I am just looking for a top that can be used if a storm "sneeks up"

Well, I'm not sure if the 964 mounting is the same as the late Carrera/SC mounting, but sundial makes a hard fiberglass top that isn't the greatest, but is only about $300, or possibly you can buy a used top (or frame) off of ebay and cover it with one of the hard tops that Wayne is now selling.

If your car is just a Sunday Driver, I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you keep it clean, and have a good Meguire's (professional) vinyl protectant on it. It will last a LONG time... I recovered mine 6 years ago, drive my car alot, even in weather... and it looks like new.

If you want to spend the $$$$ you could do Jmpro's hard top available here on Pelican... I've heard it's challenging to fit, and requires either the frame from your top, or a new/used frame. $$$$.

Another option is Ebay, you can find tops occasionally there...

I've HEARD you shouldn't wash the vinyl w/ soap, because it dries it out.

The top be off 99% of the time so I a worried about keeping the original folded up all the time. Does anyone make a fabric "emergency top" that rolls up or and stowes in the trunk for temporary use?

This might be available here...

Performance Products has a quick top for targas. It's not designed for driving, just when the car is parked. It cost's around 150.00-200.00. It might be a good solution.

Usually, you can find shelter if it rains as well. Or, just go out on really good days only... Take off your top and store it open in your garage. Personally, driving the P-car past 55 with the top off is too ballistic in the cabin for me. I prefer to keep it on for more spirited driving. If it's my wife and I on a gee-whiz cruise then I'll take it off.

You can also place the top open behind the seats of the car sitting upright. Fit's just fine. Or, you can put it in the trunk with one side slightly folded.

When I remove my top I keep it unfolded and slide it behind the seats. Then if I need to put it back on I can do it at a traffic light while I wait (assuming no on is in the pass seat). When my wife is in the car it's easier on both of us if she gets out long enough for me to put the top on (I don't make her get out at a light).

There's a secret to having the top off at freeway speeds to keep from getting beaten to death by the wind...

Put the driver's side window down by about 75-80% (only 3-4 inches of glass above the top of the door), and then put the passenger's side window down about 15-25% (only put that one down about 3-5 inches) It may look funny, but it's good for 80 or 90 mph without having to worry about getting wind burn

PS Try 140-145 with the top off sometime. It's quite a hair raising experience (no pun intended)

The waterproof Carbrella is a great way to protect your interior while parked, and goes on quicker and easier than your standard Targa top. Made of high-grade black fabric with steel reinforced panels, it weighs only four pounds and attaches in seconds. It folds up to store conveniently behind your seats.
Looks interesting. It definitely is just for parking only though - it'll fly off when driving. Also, it doesn't look too secure at all. However, useful for weekend drives when you want to drive topless.

I'm surprised that no one has made a targa top replacement that is made of a fabric that is easily rolled backwards - sort of like a large sunroof - that would be great - no need to remove the top, just roll it back.

The Carbrella uses 4 suction cups to hold the top on, so it's only for use when the car is parked. I've had mine almost a year now and I really like it.

Any other alternatives to the Carbrella?

How does "using" the Targa top make it not last?? Unless you mean parking it out in the sun 10 hours a day???
Mine's 26 years old and I wouldn't leave home without it.
Replaced the inner fabric headliner about 12-maybe 15 years ago.
Armor All the roof 2-3 times a year and it lasts forever.
I wouldn't be dropping it on the asphault and banging the corners though when removing and installing.
