It's done, driving a 67S from DC to KC..

Just bought a 67S and will drive it home next week. Yes, this is a risky idea but I'm looking foreward to the "adventure". Everything is pretty well up to snuff on the car except the tires which are being replaced prior to the drive. It's got a new belt, recent brakes, fresh oil, recent tuneup with new plugs/wires/cap, all lights work....... what else?

She's a little rough cosmetically but only has 55K documented original miles, still it's original color of bahama yellow, and it was imported from Italy 25 years ago but still has KM/H speedo.

Here's a pic,

Bill

Thanks Mark, I think this one is more my speed as far as restoring it goes. I'll be coming through St. Louis sometime Saturday or Sunday (10th or 11th this month) depending on how the trip goes. If you're around maybe I'll ring ya, I may even need help (fingers crossed)

Jazz, it's in Takoma Park MD, just on the North side of DC.

Whoa whoa. You've got an old S in the DC area and you didn't allow the NoVA/MD crowd to do an engine drop on it yet?

Mine's all in metric, too. If my L hits 200 (which it does, not that I've ever tried that on the highway!!!( I'm sure his S will.

I love having the metric, although it made it a hassle registering the car, as the state didn't know what to do with "62,000" km on the car.

Oh yeah, check the pressure in the spare tire, too. Don't ask me how I know.

Yea, I can't wait to impress my friends when I say "see how quick it gets to 100!!"

Air in the spare, better put that on my continually growing list.

I'll have to be honest, good or bad idea, I'm getting pretty excited. Do you think I'll have a problem checking a suitcase full of tools ..... 'no really it's a voltmeter, I swear!'

Looks great!

I've got a 67S Bahama yellow project car, and a 67S Gulf blue RGruppe car.....

My suggestion would be to do the wheel bearings as well, don't ask me how I know, and it's happened to me three times now, on long-distance trips.

Maybe also a drain and refill on the gearbox.

I would take with you a spare coil, fuel pump and pressure regulator, and one or two carb rebuild kits (or just the accelerator pump seals). I also take a floor jack, and one stand. Spare set of points, plugs (the factory toolkit plug wrench is the BEST for getting at the plugs), rotor, condensor, and cap.

Better to have it and not need it...than to need it and not have it.....

Also a AAA card with the higher tow limit on it!

Good luck, and join the Early S Registry with that car as well.

Eric

Anyone know what size tires to replace the 185/70's with, nobody seems to carry that size. I'm thinking 195/65, is that too wide for the 5.5 inch rims? I'm guessing they're 5.5's??

I *think* I have 195/65's on mine... although I don't know if the '68 L had 5.5" or 6" wheels.
