Carrera cooler install
Has anyone done any documentation of this with pictures? I'm armed with 101 projects and all of the supplies but lookiing for any additional info / tips / visuals.

i did the whole shootin' match on my '73 911E........hard lines from engine to front fender well, external thermostat install, reworking the rear oil lines on the engine, mounting of oil cooler in front fenderwell. i didn't take pictures of my work (except for the bracket i fabricated for mounting the cooler to the battery box), but i would be happy to snap a few and email them to you.
on a scale of 1 - 10.........1 - eating ice cream, and 10 - having your eyes gouged out with a hot fireplace poker, i would rate this job as: 1). engineering/survey work: 1 (i really enjoyed planning how to do it correctly, but it took a lot of careful planning) 2). installation of hard lines: 2 (wasn't hard, but you had to watch what you were doing so you didn't drill holes in the wrong place, or remove lines) 3). installing thermostat: 8 (i bought used lines, so 2 were totally stuck to the thermostat. no amount of heat or penetrating oil would help. i ended up buying a dremel tool and very carefully grinding down the connectors while being careful not to damage the threads. it took nerves of steel and the patience of a nun) 4). mounting of the oil cooler: 4 (i didn't want to remove my battery box, so i was forced to work with limited space. once again, thorough planning of the job made it work the first time. i was going to weld it in place, but opted to fabricate some L brackets and bolt it in place. 5). satisfaction: 1 (i have been extremely pleased with how my oil temps have been lowered, even during track events. 6). cost: 4 (it cost me approx. $1,200 in total for the hard lines, cooler, mounting hardware, thermostat, and new oil lines) email me at "tmctguer@cox.net" if you need any help. i posted quite a long thread about my work in january or february of this year, if you are interested. do a search......... |

BTW, You don't need to spend $60 on the bottom bracket + the amount to get it welded. Just purchase some L brackets at home depot and bolt it in.

yup, i fabbed a bracket from osh hardware to use the blind nut located near the bottom mount location. there is a nut there already from the factory. i think it is used to hold the trombone cooler at the bottom. i drilled a second hole and used the 8mm blind nut. viola! it is anchored solid. you can see the nut from inside the trunk easy. outside in the fender well, it is probably covered up with undercoating and gunk. scrap to find. and dont spend the money on the horn relocating brackets. you can just bend and reverse the stock ones, to work. it isnt that hard, it just kinda comes together. i had to install the entire system too.

I've seen angle iron used (Sometimes called L stock) and on mine I have some thick flat stock bent into a shape of a large "L" and then bolted to the side of the fender well and to the bottom of the cooler. It has held steady for about three years and many track events without issue. Good luck.
