So how can I get rid of my internal VR on my 86 3.2 and convert to the external VR? What do I need to disconnect on my alternator? Can I splice the external VR wires into the engine wiring harness?

Project911,

Either your regulator is defective and intermittent, or your remote wiring has a loose/intermittent connection somewhere. There should not be such a drastic change with headlamps on/off.

I know there are some folks that have reported good results with cheap aftermarket regulators, but I don't trust them ... not for my VWs, Mopars, and certainly not for the Porsche. I have had them fail on VW's and Mopars anywhere from a week to a month ... that is no bargain after you factor in the aggravation and troubleshooting time!

If the alternator you have is a Marchal/Motorola, then get a Marchal regulator and adapt your wiring to it ... and enjoy a reliable alternator and regulator matched to each other.
