Tire size question

Hi all, I'm new here to the forums and actually found this site by searching for the answer to the following question. I have a 1982 911sc and I'm due for a new set of tires. The car has the factory optional Fuchs 16 inch wheels and currently has 205/55/16 and 225/50/16 Pirellis. I was wondering about recomendations on a brand of tire for replacement and if the sizes I currently have installed are the only sizes that will fit the car/wheel, IE can I fit any bigger tires with out replacing the wheels. Thanks in advance for any advice.

DON"T GET MORE PIRELLIS!!!!!!!!! that's just my personal bias talking, but I think pirellis are some of the worst tires you can possibly put on a car. I'm a huge fan of yokohama, the AVS ES100s seem to be great, they offer great performance, in dry and wet weather which is nice. Alot of people I know like Dunlop SP 8 or 9000s. As far as wider tires, 205 and 225 is a really nice setup on SCs, and unless you're tracking it there's almost no point in putting wider tires on, you'll never use the added traction and it's more expensive. My boss has a '71 911E with 205s all around and an a track he'll eat 993s alive that have 275s on the rear, yes, it's highly modified, but still... I just wouldn't put bigger tires on a car simply for the sake of putting bigger tires on a car.

Bridgestone S03's Bridgestone RE 750's, a couple of models of Yokohama, Michelin makes some good, but pricey tires, even possibly Kumho.

Stick with the sizes you have. You can fit larger tires on the rims, but they actually won't handle as well because they are at the absolute limit of what will fit your rims. If you want more tire you will need more wheel.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, I had a feeling those were probably the optimal size for the rims and application. But your never sure until you ask !

My Infiniti G35 has 215's on all four corners with the Sport Package. Thoughtfully, Infiniti put grippy Goodyear summer tires on at the factory and it corners like it is wearing 245's! Tire compound and suspension make grip, not width alone.

My point: Keep the stock size, and go with a grippy tire. I like Yokohama for the price/value/grip compromise.
