only for tall drivers
Need help to find race type seats ( where the seat back is adjustable) for a 87 930. I've tried Corbeau and head is only 1/2 inch from roof with helmet on its impossible. Any tall drivers found a seat that works? I'm 6'3'

Have you checked your sanctioning body? If your looking for a "racing" seat, most are going to be fixed back for safety. If your looking for a supportive seat that is racey then their is likely to be an option. Most people I know adjust the back by rotating the mounts or using washers to adjust incline. Remember we are most alert when our brain stems are verticle. In a race car of mine, I had to go to an aluminum seat with custom padding to get my head below the cage. Actually with a suit on for limited amounts of time it is quite comfortable. If your going to track the car, either fixed back or support the seat with an adjustable support from the cage. Have you noticed how many 911's leave the track backwards....this is when a strong seat is going to be most important!

if you need recline, I would recommend recaro sport seats or SRDs with recaro's flat rails. that might be the most you can get without modifying (read: cut/weld) the seat mounts that are part of the car.

At 6'5" I can certainly understand your situation. For a long time I wouldn't (couldn't) take my car to the track. Autocross was an adventure, with the seat almost laid back and still I could barely turn my head with the helmet on.
After and long, but not nessecarily exhaustive search of aftermarket seats to see if any would result in lower seating, none do. Ultimately I had the seat rail cut out and rewelded at the very bottom of the tunnel/box. Almost impossible now to get at the nuts for the seat rail, but I replaced the the stock seat with the Sparco EVO-2 and have been able to use the car for autocross and DE. The car is now very comfortable to drive. I originally thought that I would keep the original seat for everyday use and swap it out for DE/Autocross, but as I said getting to the nuts under the seat is almost impossible. It really suprises instructors who get into my car how low the seat is. BTW if you are going to use this car for DE, and are at anytime thinking of using 5 or 6 point harness, have the shop weld in the backing plates for the sub belts while the rails are being rewelded. Unfortunately this solution is somewhat expensive, but I bought the car to enjoy this way. |

6'2" here with Recaro Speeds. I did drill two more rear mounting holes at the rear of the seat beds, and I've got great leg/head room. I have a Targa, so Coupes w/ & w/o sunroofs may differ.
BTW, I used the stock manual sliders from my old sport seats.

Don - I am 6'2" and got the Corbeau TRS seat to work for me. I had Corbeau shave 1/2 inch of padding off the seat bottom and add a sub belt hole. I also removed the washer they put between the sliders and the seat mount rails (hey it's at least 1 mm). I have also heard that a good rubber mallet can help push the seat mounts down a bit.
Can you fit with a helmet on with the OEM seats? If so, the Corbeau's should work as you will end up with almst the exact same headroom (maybe a tad more). Bill Also Imagine Auto Stage 3 + 930 (I love that car) -

Bill,
I have the Corbeau vx2000 and had then shave 1" off the seat and it still sits higher than the stock seat. I can adjust the stock seat back to tilt back so I have head room with helmet on. We also added some spacers to the front of the seat to tilt it back. Cut the sliders in the rear to drop that down also got another inch that way. I may have to cut the rails out and lower them. Isn't that stage 3 great the linier boost of the turbo just make's it pull I have a hard time getting to high RPM because your going so fast so soon. Where are you located? Don

6'6" with a custom made Kirkey.
Think it cost around $600 with the custom cover. This seat has a 20 degree tilt which was ok. Since the seat is so low in the car I found I had to add a raised area under my legs for more support. Seeing as my knees are bent pretty good when racing. Other than that I really enjoy the seat. 5 hours and 300 miles on the California Speedway recently and none of the soreness and fatigue I had from my too small Sparco. I was far too tall for that seat, felt like I was sitting in a child's car seat. ![]() new Kirkey seat. ![]() previous smaller Sparco seat. ![]() Thanks Sam for the pics.
