argument with a friend, LSD

i am in a discussion with a friend. i search the past LSD post and got confused. with both back wheel in the air, you spin one wheel, the other one DOESNT move at all. that doesnt mean there is a LSD present, right? as i understand, both wheels need to spin in the same direction. correct? we both agree opposite means open diff. what the heck is the other wheel not spinning?

I am pretty sure with LSD both move the same direction, if only one moves or they move opposite direction then you DON'T have LSD.

I'm sure an expert will tell us for sure here soon.

Unless it's in gear, right?

Both wheels turn in the same direction. Out of gear with the brakes off, that is. I think it's $1800 at parts heaven for a used LSD! Yikes!

If you spin one wheel and you see pretty colors, then yes, it was LSD.

If the car is in the air, and in neutral, if you can spin one tire one direction and the other spins the same direction, then it is an LSD (clutch pack style LSD).

Doing this in gear will cause you not to be able to spin the tire if the car is an LSD (clutch pack LSD) (by hand).

But, if the car has a torsen type LSD then it will act exactly like an open diff with respect to the above mentioned test.

If the car is in gear the wheels will turn in opposite directions w/ factory LSD, (turning one rear wheel by hand, other turns opposite), but in nuetral the other wheel will turn same direction. That is the only true "on the hoist" test, a non-LSD car won't do that trick.
