I'm about to purchase an indoor parking space in my building that has a slight (perhaps 5 degree) tilt angle left to right (or right to left, if you park head first). I'm wondering: will this negatively affect the car on start up? Will all the oil flow to one side of the engine, leaving the other high and dry? Is it better to have the tilt towards the passenger side or the driver side? Will the tires be affected?
Thanks for your input! ![]()

Maybe dangerous if there's another car parked next to you on the uphill side of the incline... if they don't take care to not let the door swing into your car. Otherwise I wouldn't worry.

The wonders of a dry sump motor. There's enough oil where it needs to be to start the car practically on it's side. However, if you feel that the parking will somehow have a biased effect on your car, park it in backwards every other time.
![]() PS, I wonder how biased our cars feel with only one person in them a lot of the time? Shouldn't we drive them from the other seat every other time? ![]() |

My parking spot at work is like this, I notice a little bit of oil burning off on startup when I park there. At home its on flat ground and it doesn't smoke. I figure a little oil seaps pat the rings when it's parked on the incline but it's never caused me any problems.

I've been parking like this at home for the last two years without adverse results.
I see some white smoke on startup but it only does happen from time to time. |

I've got a bit of an incline at my house that I try not to park on. when I check the oil on that incline it's at the min mark, when I check it on level ground it's at the max.
Not sure how bad that is...I try not to do it.

Its pointless checking oil level on a slope. All that tells you is that the oil tank is not level.

The planet where I park my car is rotating at more then 1000 miles per hour at the equator. Being in Northern California, I figure I'm spinning at about 650 miles per hour. Makes it very tough to parallel park. I'm thinking of moving to Canada. Planet moving slower there.

Gon fix it with me hammer

put the car in gear and put wooden blocks behind the wheels if you don't trust the handbrake... you will sleep better at night knowing the car will not roll away on it's own...

Uh, yeah - that isn't EXACTLY what I meant - but close. Is it dangerous to start my car in this location? That's what I meant, manual says if the OEL gauge is ever in the red to stop the car, when I start the car on this slope - it's in the red. That better?

Mike- your engine will do just fine starting on a slope. The manual should say that if your OEL guage is ever in the red when the car is running at operating temperature on level ground then stop the car. If thats the case it means that there is simply not enough oil in the system to effectively lubricate throughout the engine.
The first few seconds after starting the car from cold are about the hardest the engine sees until oil makes it into every nook & cranny. I think that the oil pump will do its job just fine unless you're talking a REALLY extreme slope ![]() |
