MSD ignition
I was wondering who has installed the MSD ingnition on their Porsche and if its applicable to a 86 911 without a stock CD unit? I would put it on my 86 911 but I dont know if there is a benefit to doing so.

I installed an MSD in my 1982 911SC. I was skeptical about the performance claims, but I needed a new ignition and I had installed one before on my 1971 Buick GSX. The results? I was surprised about the performance gain! I could really feel it at the lower engine speed. And it costs less than about anything else. One note, and with all due respect to authors: Do not refer to 101 Porsche Project book when installing this unit. I did and would up figuring out that it is about 100% wrong. Also, be sure to use an MSD Blaster 2 coil and not the Bosche Blue coil (it will over heat).
If you need more info, e-mail me at jacheek@summergrove.net. Good luck! |
On a DME car, I would stick with what you've got. ...and I have an MSD on my car

Kevin:
Good advice from JMZ. I would stick with the factory stuff on Motronic-equipped cars. I'm a big big fan of MSD's but I see little or no benefit for these cars. |
I'm using an HEI coil on my 86 with good results. The stock one is good for 15kv while the HEI will go to 40kv. I think MSD has the same coil available.

stay stock and read this
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=152269&perpage=20&highligh t=msd&pagenumber=3 read the artical from car craft on page 3 http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/56400/ "If you were hoping for a clear-cut winner, you're in for a disappointment. All five performed to within a ½ percent variation between each other. This in itself is amazing considering how hard it is to consistently produce similar numbers at any dyno session. Our peak baseline numbers showed 494 hp and 529 lb-ft, and the test results yielded power levels between 491 and 497 hp and torque ranging from 529 and 534 lb-ft. The testing proves that at this level of performance, all five of the boxes perform equally. The bottom line is basically this: Pick the box with the name you trust or the price you like." from car craft |
I heard LorenFB realy likes them, ask him what he thinks.
