broken heat exchanger

I just repaired my 930 CV joint which fell off after the bolts backed out - the only real damage that occurred was that the anterior end of the heat exchanger on that side broke off from the axle hitting it - it was rusty and did more than dent in - I can see the bare end of the hose that connected to it but other than that the car runs like it did before - Is this something I need to fix now or is it merely a heater problem to be fixed before next winter. Obviously the fix is a new exchanger which by the looks of the rusted bolts does not seem like a gem of a job.

Thanks

If the CV did no damage to the exchanger's internal exhaust pipes, I'd say you can run it until you can replace it. The sheetmetal exterior is really just to trap the heat for the heating system. Airflow through this part also helps cool the heads.

However, if the sheetmetal was that rusty, chances are the pipes are rusty too. I'd just check it out carefully. Used 930 HEs sell for a song, so you can pick one up used and then have no worries.

Good luck!

Thanks

I think I'll let things be and update to SSI's/ B&B's when I have the means.
