911 insurance in NJ
This question is specific to NJ. As some may know one of the toughest and most expensive states to insure a car in.
Got a quote from State Farm on my 1985 911 @ $800 per year for Comprehensive (No Collision coverage). I have a perfect record and get a Multi-Car discount and 15% off for the alarm/cutoff system. I may call Manufacturers...not sure yet. Any advice on Insurers that do business in NJ that will discount for low annual miles? I once used Modern Home but it was for Parades and shows.

I use NJ Manufactures for my 78 911SC.
Rate is $821 full coverage including collision/ $500 deductable. The car is classified as a pleasure vehicle. Less than 12 miles per day restriction. (I don't know how they enforce that). Also NJM offers safe drive rebate at the end of the policy year if you are ticket & accident free!!. Where are the German car stables?. I live in Short Hills. |

Have some stuff coming off my license shortly so it's clean for the 1st time in years.
Spoke to my broker about a new policy and he mentioned classic insurance for it. Would run me $300-400 in NY which is almost as bad as NJ. Problem is the mileage which he says some insurers do check. Not far fetched to assume they have access to DMV records from annual inspections. Divide total mileage difference from one year to the next by 365 to get an average. After all civilians can get the info from Carfax so why can't insurers get it from somewhere, not that they always do. Scott

State Farm also discounts for Defensive Driving Class. I'm in Convent Station (Morris Township) near the Morris Museum. Grew up next door in Livingston. Thanks for the feedback guys. BTW, I just checked with Hagerty and it's $395 annually but their record seems to be lees than stellar.

Not to throw the direction of your thread off course. But one of my friends from NJ was telling me the other day that they started a law on traffic violations that nails you with a automatic 200 dollar surcharge if your given given any kind of ticket for a moving violation. Do you guys know if that is really true?

If you have 6 points you'll be charged a $100 insurance surcharge....$25 for each additional point. So for up to 12, where you lose your priviledge, it can add up. I've never heard of a $200 charge for any moving violation.

I use NJ manufacturers for all my cars except the 911. They are a great company and if you can get in that is the way to go. I pay way less than all my friends on 3 cars. I have full coverage on a mini cooper s, a wrx, and just liability on a 93 ford probe. All together I think its around 1800/year for those. On the p-car I have american collectors and thats about 130/year. I'm just not suppost to drive more than 2500 per year.

Just did a quote with NJ CURE.....quite a bit more than State Farm.
They require that I insure all cars under them and they don't do bikes. NJ Manufactures next and then I'll American.

Rick,
Even though I'm in California, this might help. At trader online in the classics section, hit the insurance key. There is a classic auto insurance company (I forget the name) that will cheaply insure 20 year old cars. If you know when your car was built, it might be elligible. If not, it will definitely be elligible next year. Their only requirement is that it is not a daily driver, and you have at least one other car for every driver in your house. The plus is that there is no maximum allowable miles. Give it a whirl! |

$800 per year sounds pretty cheap especially in NJ assuming you drive it. Standard insurance?? What do you get if its totaled? $9000 or so for a 20 year old depreciated car??? I guess I'd ask.

I just checked with American Collector. With a $25k agreed value, collision w/ 500 deductible I'm at $459. Better than $800 from SF w/o collision. The limit is 2500 miles annually which is most likely fine for this car.
I'm hoping my car is woth more than $9k if totalled. I'll follow up on other suggestions.

I drive 2500 in a month or two??? SF quote was "agreed upon value" @ 2500 per year?? and if you don't have "agreed upon value" all you WILL get is $9000.
NJ doesn't sound too expensive to me anymore. I guess I haven't lived or been insured there since 1985. ![]()

SF would not give me an agreed upon value which bothered me as well.
Where you live in NJ influences your premium big time.

The $459 is a good price most anywhere for $25K "SV" and 2500 per year limit.
I lived in Mountainside and worked at 39th and 3rd in the city. ![]() edit: For some perspective, my 2002 Harley is insured at "SV" for $35,000 and 12,000 miles per year. Cost is $831.

Mountainside...off 22, right?
While we're at it I have close family friends in Fond du Lac. Ever here of Park Cheese? BTW, it's looking like American Collectors is going to get my business. However, a co-worker is saying he gets excellent service from Hagerty with few questions asked.

Their String cheese is THE best.

You may want to look into Leland West. I've used them for almost a year, and no issues to date. I have a clean record, $1k deductable, 5k miles/year, with an agreed value of $34k for my 89 Turbo with an $860 yearly premium.
