76 2.7 Issues - sputter when hot

Good afternoon y'all...Just stumbled on this board (well, about 2 hours ago - been busy searching through the threads to see if my issue has been addressed). I've got a '76 911S Targa, 2.7L. I've developed a little issue shortly after putting it back on the road for the spring. It seems that after the vehicle warms up, I have a slight hesitation / sputter / rumbling thing going on under acceleration. I was hoping that after I did a tune up the issue would disappear, but alas, it did not. As I'm far from wealthy, I didn't replace everything that I really should have. What I have done, valve adjustment, fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, plugs, points. Did not do the dist cap or ignition wires. I've skimmed through a few tech articles here and there, and the closest I can get from them is that I may have some type of vaccum / air leak, but not completely confident of that. When I changed out the plugs, 5 of them looked beautiful (tanish gray contacts, the center still white, no residue), but the number 3 plug had a bit of carbon build up on it. I'm beginning to think it's not necessarily vaccum related, but either plug wire, or a fuel distribution problem (injector?). Any thoughts or suggestions on this before I drop a couple hundred bucks on new plug wires (ignition wires)? Thanks...Russ

Mine did the same thing when I first bought it. I replaced the plugs and coil and the sputtering went away.

juss russ, you have at least a starting point. maybe test that one spark plug wire. dig your multimeter out of the toolbox and check that sparkplug wire at the #3 plug. if you look closely, the parts of the wire comes apart. (do you have stock wires?) test each parts. the sparkplug end should see 3000ohms. and the tiny connection at the dist end sees 1000ohms. as i have read here, the connectors sometimes go bad when the motor is hot.

my 75, runs better when i drive the piss out of it. it is funny that way, especially after a long non drive period.
