Refinishing Chromed Fuchs

I'd like to refinish my Fuchs. The PO had them chromed and now the chrome has blistered and peeled. I'm planning on having them stripped to bare then polishing them. Anybody have any experience with this? What can I expect the surface to be like after removal of the plating?

I'm currently doing the same. They come out "white" almost when they are stripped. Don't put chrome back on - they become heavier and hold in more heat.

What is this surface finish like? Mine have a few blisters in the chrome and I'd like to know what the surface finish is like before I get started.

I've heard that stripping chrome off of Fuchs wheels can leave the surface pitted. Send them to Al Reed. He can have the chrome stripped for you, and then evaluate whether he can polish them out.

Doug:

Search the board (as suggested by Kurt). Al is THE MAN when it comes to polishing or refinishing Fuchs wheels. He's in Anaheim, California, and people ship him wheels from all over the country. He and his wife Diane are great people, too!

refinished fuchs

I recently got my wheels back from AL REED & his wife and they are AWESOME!!!!! They polished the lip and paddles and painted the inserts gran prix white to match my '76 911s targa. At first I thought it would be a bit much(I'm more of a traditionalist...not very "showy"). I trusted Al and I can't go anywhere without someone saying how hot the wheels look!! His wife even hand painted the crest! He has a second set of wheels of mine that are due back next week for my daily driver, then he gets the winter wheels. Al's the man!! If your looking to spruce up your car without spending bucks on new wheels, or second guessing offset this is the strongest value out there!
Good luck,
Nikita

I had my wheels done at wheel enhancement and they came out sweet they were only $100 and change each. They used to be chrome as well.

relkceb;
For a $100 were they re-chromed, or polished. I'm a little concerned about polished. I know they look sweet; out of the box; but what kind of labor pains will I have to do to keep them that way. My chrome wheels took nothing but washing and drying for 10+ years.

I've got the original fuchs sitting in my garage for mine. I've heard good things about Al Reed and that Wheel enhancements is kind of pricey.

I don't know what Al charges but mine have blacked out centers and I want the pedals to be polished as well as the lip.

Hey squash I was thinking of my old wheels that were just painted nothing special. Wheel enhancement did these wheels for $170 a piece. The way I looked at it was thats cheaper than a new set of wheels. They are clear anodized with black centers and hand painted caps. I waxed them first thing that has helped with cleaning just a simple wipe off is all they need every week. I wax them a few times a year. I'm sure they will last for many years until they need to be redone again.

I had chrome fuchs wheels, and sent them to Al Reed to be stripped and polished. There is some pitting in them, but you have to get pretty picky. The following are some pictures, they aren't the best.

Al Reed polishing with clear powdercoat on them. Over 1 year old and at least 6000 miles on them:
