Foreign object dropped into gas tank. Trouble?
 

If you've ever dropped your dip stick into the oil tank, then this won't seem so clutsy.
When adding some gas treatment (dry gas) to the 911 last winter, the plastic ring (left after the cap was removed) slipped off the bottle neck and became a permanent part of the 911 fuel system. I haven't worried about it being in there and haven't noticed any change in performance.
Is this something I need to do something about or just let it be?

How long ago was last winter? IMO if it was more than a tank of gas ago I would not worry about it.

Now if the foreign object was sugar cubes................

I've never taken the 911 gas tank apart, but if it's anything like a 914 tank (and I think it is), there is nothing to worry about. There is a very fine screen where the gas leaves the tank. The plastic ring won't bother it.

The ring is probably accessible thru the fuel sender opening. Many tool manufacturers make an extended “grabber” tool. With that and a flashlight on an extended wand you should be able to find and retrieve the plastic ring.

Additionally you can inspect the bottom of the tank for rust and the condition of the fuel pick-up screen.

Prior to starting this project, you should buy a new fuel level sender gasket. Start with very low fuel and siphon the rest. Be very careful working around gasoline. You could purge the tank of air with CO2.

Also, as Victor said, it probably won’t hurt to just leave it there.

Just a side note: The gasket I bought from Pelican was way too thick for the length of the litte 5mm bolts. So, be prepared to buy some longer bolts. I just put the old gasket on with a tiny amount of silicone sealer. No problems.

I have always worried about the little ring on the oil bottles too. Have always removed them before filling.

Isn't going to hurt anything. I would just leave it there.
