Painting Airbox

What is the orginal finish for the airbox on a '68? Should I use Wurth flat or satin? What about prepping it, should I sand blast? I did a search and found nothing. Thanks in advance

I used to have the '69 S featured in "Porsche 911 Buyer's Guide" by Leffingwell. Everything on that car was was perfect and original. I don't how they prepped it, but the air box was high gloss black (it's in a picture on p. 51).

I think the proper finish is Wurth satin black. If you have access to a glass beader that would be ideal. Just make sure to blast ALL of the glass out when your done.

I'm sure the Wurth is more accurate, but I used the high temp satin black that Rustoleum makes. Be sure to wash in a good dish washing liquid first to remove as much oil residue as possible and then a light sanding is all the prep I did. A couple thousand miles later and still looks good.

I think it is Krylon or Rustoleum Satin Black that I have used to .

I was curious about the Wurth as no matter what brand of rattle can paint I have purchased I always find the final paint job to be very brittle. If I bump the surface of spray can paint it will easily chip down to the base metal no matter how much I prepped the bare metal and applied primer.

It just acts like most of the spray can paints I have tried, appear to have no elasticity associated with them. Maybe I have just not found the right brand spray can paint or else it is an inherent problem with spray can paint.

There is a off the shelf brand that makes a paint for use on plastics, I think it is Krylon. But I thought it might not hold up to the engine heat.

This friend of mine purchased some spray can paint while he was in Thailand. He did some tests spraying with it and found it to be similar to Por 15 in its ability to resist chips and staining.

He tried to bring some back to the US but they confiscated it at the airport. Probablky because it was under pressure.

I would have liked to have seen it.

I don't know if applies to early 911's, but I've been around 356's for a number of years and I've become more and more convinced that the factory used a lot of what we would consider very high gloss black paint for things such as engine sheet metal. The tendency now is use semi-gloss or satin, which I think looks a lot better, but I think they often used a higher gloss. I also think that, again with the 356's, that they sometimes used what they had on hand.

I imagine things became more consistent over time, so maybe the early 911's were uniform in these kinds of things.

P.S. My son removed the air box on his '71 black on black S and installed rain shields that he had had powder coated red -- looks seriously *****in' and sounds great.
