Hershey Swap: Impressions?
Just got back fromt the Hershey Swap. I thought there was a wide variety of parts for sale and some good deals. The collection of Porsches in the Porsche Parking Only lot was quite a treat. However, the cars for sale struck me as way overpriced. A '79 SC for $19.5k just strikes me a dreaming. And that was a firm $19.5k.

I don't know........I'm pretty impressed just sitting in my chair in CA looking at the pics. It's been too long since Dunkels and way too long before the GAF. Seems like you guys have a neat thing going on this weekend. Hope that nice weather holds out. It's freaking 85 here.

The prices at Hershey are always WAY over the top.

that was my first porsche event of any kind and it was like being 4 years old and in a candy store. a little expensive, but hey, that's the nature of the beast. i broke down on the way home and the tow truck driver told me about a '62 he had towed earlier that day, PRIMO mint condition that threw a rod. if you're that dude, my condolences man...

The best thing about Hershey this year was the weather and the great turn out of Porsche's. The swap meet IMO was not that great, very poor inventory of good used parts.
It was great to see and hear that many Porsches at one time.

The wife and I drove up to Hershey on friday. Her 968 is a wonderful car on the highway and we had no problems . We went to the swap meet early and I found what I was looking for at a price that I was happy with. This makes my 911 happy. We spent a coupla hours just looking at the vast # of P-cars.I have to admit that I saw a lot of bling being sold though. On the other hand I did see some really wonderful cars. We left about 11:00 and drove home. Again her 968 ran great. In somation I would say that our trip to Hershey was just about what was expected. The only down side was our cat was mad as h#ll for being left alone for a day and a half. Best to all, Randy

Par - the parts selection seemed to be noticably smaller than in pervious years for all cars.

i bought:
dynomax/resonator 2.5in exhaust for 78-up for $70 cat bypass pipe for $30 nice used front carpets for $20 underhood (front) blower and box for $20 webers/manifolds/linkage/air cleaners for a 914 2.0 for $50 uncle got a pair of very gently used sachs power clutches (911 and 930) for $100/ea, one with a new disc, the other with a carbon fiber paddle disc, both with excellent throwout bearings, and a set of 928s4 calipers with 911 conversion mounts for $300. BTW i walked the swap no less than 7 times, and got there at 7:20. there seemed to be fewer 'new' parts vendors, though... would have been nice to get a fuel accumulator or a couple gaskets without paying for shipping. i saw at least 4 complete cis systems in pieces... fuel distributors, lines, pumps, compensators, etc... they were buried, though. the only reasonable cars for sale were 928's... i agree wholeheartedly with the 911 pricing... wow. that happens at car shows, though... it's very hard to find a good deal on a car at a show. try out the mopar nats or carlisle. if it runs and drives, and is shiny, you're going to pay. there were twice as many parts vendors as last year's rain soaked funfest. there were three times the cars. it was a great time!

Pettybird,
After I left you I found a 915 that doesn't need rebuilding for $700 and Weber carbs with manifold and linkage for $600. I was happy since these items cost much more on this board and ebay.

Had alot of fun! My first time to Hershey and definitely not my last! I needed a new set of floorboards for the SC (old ones rotted from getting wet too many times!) and Rennline was there selling their wares. They had some great pricing! Picked up a pair of black powder coated aluminum floorboards for $130! Can't wait to get them installed!
There were some ridiculous prices on some of the cars. That Weissach Edition was a loooong way away from being worth what the owner was asking. Not in very good condition and the wheels weren't even correctly finished. Oh well, at least the owner probably got to enjoy driving it back home!

Pettybird,
The CIS to EFI is still in the experimental stage. So the Webers are a backup.

I was at Hershey last 2 years ago and thought this year seemed larger, but, not sure if that was due to having more cars to look for!
Didn't see any 4-cam parts other than a set of spyder solex carbs. Not sure it they were or not. Bought a mint tool kit for my '69 S for $535. Bought the 1969 911 part manuals (5 volumes?) and one other factory manual for $300.00 Saw a set of 56-59 356 rims for $25 each. NOS 914-6 wiring harness - $750.00. Very clean. 911 Forever Young - $40.00 Set of seats with basket weave - black for a 1960's 911. Driver side had splits in the seams but passenger side was very good. $80.00 would have taken them. They sat there all day I think. Was tempted to buy just because they were cheap are correct for my car. Fuchs 15-6 - $125.00 Bought a 5 911 books (2 by wayne) from Bill Block. Very reasonable. One dealer was there selling large factory posters of GT3's and others for $5.00! I too was disappointed by not being able to buy some new parts. Was looking for plugs, gas pedal, etc. for my '69 but no go. I didn't look at any of the cars that were for sale. Drove 10 hours from Michigan and will do it again. Anyone headed down to Indiana for the Porsche Swap meet in July? |

Smpiers, is Tweeks(sorry, mid american motor works)back to having a swap meet again? They were good when they were in Indy, I went to the frist one in Ill. and haven't been back. It seems that they even started calling it something besides a swap meet. I hope that they have gone back to swap meets. Randy

I came there with $600 in my pocket for whatever caught my eye and I left with $550. I spent $50 for lunch and for stuff at Chocolate World. I was a bit disappointed at the selection of parts, although I am a picky customer.
