Alarm Systems
 

Thsi is a touchy subject as revealing too much is not advised however, I would like opinions on the various alarm systems out there along with their effectiveness in detering theft of vehicle and warding off intrusions.

I have seen the Cliffords, Cobra's, Chapman's various kill switch systems etc and the factory alarm on 911's.

As long as you keep in mind that alarms only deter.......those who really want your car or the items inside of it will take it.

I view alarms more as a convenience. i.e. remote door locks, windows up and down by remote, opening and closing the top by remote and poping open the trunk by remote.

I never leave anything of value in plan sight inside the car and never park the car anywhere unsafe.

Also, the alarm is only as good as the install. Make sure to get some references of who you plan to have install your alarm. If installed incorrectly, the alarm will be unreliable and a pain in the a$$.

I've heard they make car alarms with flamethrowers on them...

Any DEI product. Viper / Python / Sidewinder they are all the same alarm just diffrent names. They are by far the leader in security systems. I have been installing car audio and alarms for about 15 yrs now and have seen it all.

I think the installation of the systems is also a critical component. You could buy a great alarm system, then have some hacks mess up the installation. When I bought my car, I had to have the butchered system professionally removed and it was a rat's nest of wires and switches. Never again!

.....Tim, on Friday night / Sat morning my car was parked in the Adams Mark garage in Daytona (which was supposed to be secure), but my in dash stereo was taken (left me the changer) and the gps navigation screen was taken.....This was an earlier post on this board...

I suspect he discovered the damage the next morning....What if anything could he have done to protect his stereo and Nav.

Visual deterrents can be effective but require extra work on your part.

I must ask a dumb question but is a thief really going to want to steal an older 911? What advantage do they gain? So say they do take the car - then what - at least in my case they would be a dead target driving a guards red 911 away - the color alone will get them in trouble. With stereos - they want the ones with the screens now, not a $100 Blaupunkt.
