Question Is This Motor Rebuildable?

(This has also been posted on the 911 Engine Rebuilding Forum but is posted here looking for anyone who can give me any input.)

This is my 1980 911 SC's motor. (The view is looking up into the case with the oil sump cover and sump screen removed.) Pictures are available here.

From these pictures you can see that a rod busted and did damage to the case. Can anyone speculate as to whether there is likely to be more case damage, and whether or not this motor (judging from the damage we can see here) is rebuildable?

Thanks for any input.

Ouch, I have never rebuilt a 911 motor, but I would think that the best that you could hope for was to use some of the parts from your motor. Good luck!

Cool...lot 'o parts...like when I removed my sump screen. Sure it's rebuildable. You'll just need a "donor" case. It's all the little parts that add up to an expensive rebuild. So be sure to save ALL parts that are good, and look for used/refurbished versions of those that aren't.

The case is junk. I would also bet that the crank and rod is shot too. Now way to tell until you split it open. Cores have gotten cheap enough that if you pick up a short block you would be set. Some will say you can repair the case, I am not a big fan of that.

I actually bought it in it's current "non-running" condition. The former owner was using it as a daily driver; he said he was driving to work, it made a horrible racket, stopped running and couldn't be turned over when he tried to restart it. I'm sure it must have been giving him some "warning noises" before it let go--but considering the condition of the rest of the car, he probably just ignored the warnings.

I think I'm going to end up selling it (the whole car) as is--it's just looking like I won't have time to (learn to) rebuilt it--even if it could be "saved."

Thanks for the input; keep it coming if anyone else has any comments.

Wow, Stephen from Imagine Auto! Cool. Since I haven't had the same access to my email as I used to I haven't been able to easily keep up on the Rennlist. I missed hearing of You and Michael's exploits.

Hopefully we'll see you around, lots of Turbo heads here that are always asking technical questions or just talking hot air!

LOL, I am always around. The more things stay the same the more they change. Michael actually owns a Bosch center in Ill. We don't talk nearly as much as we use to. Hard to believe. I also have to be a little more careful of the old stories. While they still happen you wouldn't want to see your National PCA Tech Advsior posting stories of such But yes, it is me Good to see ya though!
