aasco flywheel question in an 98 carrera
A friend of mine just installed a aasco light weight sport flywheel with a carbon fiber clutch plate into a 99 carrera. The car seems to have a rough idle and some internal noise in the tranny when accelerating in 2 gear at about 2000 rpms. Could be a bearing? Not quite sure yet. I am just curious if anyone has expierienced and strange noises or driving characteristics after the installation.
Btw the part # is 106411-11. The weight is 14.35#s Thanks |

Chef:
Assuming that the Aase flywheel/Tilton clutch was setup properly, the noises your friend hears are normal for these triple-plate 5.25" race clutches. These are strictly race car parts and you can hear all the the tranny noises as well as the clutch plates rattling at low engine speeds due to all the combined backlash that is not being dampened in any way.... ![]() IMHO, this stuff is totally unsuitable for road use and I would never sell that setup to someone with a street car,.....

Thanks Steve. I guess those are some of the problems people encounter when putting race parts on a street car. The car is going back to the shop to get the tranny looked at. The rpms definetly come up faster now though! Again, its not my car.

Im no 996 expert but I do believe steve is right. How many pucks were on this disc? also, if it was a total solid disc hub as it sounds then your gonna hear quite a bit more noise than ever before. Maybe he went too agressive.

light flywheel
This part number is for a street use with the 996 models not the 5.5 tripple plate usally associated with Aasco Racing units.
In regards to the part in question when a Dual Mass unit is replaced with Aluminum it does sacrafice some of the sound damping, the 34 lbs of steel and rubber that the stock unit is comprised of do insulate drive line noise. Their have been no user complaints of this however in over 250 units sold. However Porsche has received complaints in regard to the Getrag gear boxes, bearing noise and syncro issues. The Flywheel will not affect idle conditions at all. best regards Aasco Last edited by racing97; 04-28-2004 at 10:18 AM.. |

Hi Aasco,
What else can you tell me re: bearing noises and syncro issues on the car. The problem seems to be gassing up in second from about 2K rpms. A grinding noise of some sort. It does sound like a bearing problem. Do you know if there have been any recalls? Thanks Joe PS You guys make a great product |

Hello Joseph, thanks for your kind words
The direct connection I have to that type of situation is that a racing customer of ours had a trans noise in his daily driver which was a 99, at that time he did not have one of our Aluminum units on the car. It was not a Ring and Pinion sound but a slight grinding, rumbling sound that increased in resonation with RPM and was not getting any better as time past. Our freind checked into the dealer and with 65,000 or 70,000 miles on his car they advised replacing the clutch and trans for $14,000. We brought it into our shop pulled the trans and sent it out to an associtate of ours. He reported to us the typical problems with these units are the Pinion Brgs and the Syncros so he the rebuild, and it worked out just fine. The trans itself is a very technically difficult and labor intensive operation but his price was less than half of the new unit. We installed the same Flywheel that was used in your install, new pressure plate and stock disc and it runs quiet and fast. P.S. I remeber seeing threads about 99's and trans replacements by the Factory Warranty somewhere Kindest regards Aasco |

So a bit less than $8k for a trans rebuild? Wow.
