Fan pulley wrench?
Anyone have a sensible alternative to the PP fan pulley wrench? Fan belt is bust, need to replace asap - I'm on the other coast in FL so trying to avoid the delay shipping will incur.

I think you might be able to use a 2" spanner wrench that the fire department uses on their hoses. You might stop by one and talk to them about it. They may be able to have a source for you.

I'll probably get a nasty email from Wayne for this. But frankly, the early 911 fan pully wrench he sells is a P.O.C. Buy the replica sold by Stoddards, and it won't bend...Wayne? Before you get too pissed? Think about offering a wrench that really works?

Made a tool which did the job nicely. Bought a length of flat, one a half inch wide hardened steel, a couple of hardened bolts and nuts. Drilled 2 holes in the flat steel at the correct offset for the holes in the pulley, fitted the bolts one side and the nuts the other, then cut out a rough semi circle to allow a socket access to the fan nut (thanks again Mr Dremel). Less than $10.
Voila, job done. |

A while back there was a thread about cheap parts that substitute for Porsche...
And I remember reading about a tool available from a bike store that worked as a fan pulley wrench. Perhaps a search can identify it. I need one too for an SC, but $40 is too much for me for a new one.

chuck, you are looking for a bottom bracket spanner wrench. check with park tools. by memory it would seem too small.

I was just checking McMaster Carr and they have them for about $6.49 for the 1" all the way up to 6" for about $23.26.

We may be talking two different fan pully wrenches here guys...the one I'm thinking of has the two pins that stick through the pully holes...used on early 911 models, and I'm not sure when the design was changed. Anyway, the Stoddard part number was T52.003.003. I ordered this for Evren back in July of '03 after the one he bought here bent. The Stoddard version is a slightly beefier design than original. The '03 Stoddard Catalog price was $22.90, but if I remember correctly, the ding for shipping was hefty. Stoddard's toll free number is 1-800-342-1414 My overall impression is that the prices are high, and customer service is not up to Pelican standards. But quite often they have items that nobody else seems to carry. And, yes, the early 911 fan pully wrench they sell is MUCH stronger than the one you can buy here.

Used an aluminum pedal arm from my son's bike that had the big end stripped out. drilled & tapped for a couple of pins (small bolts with the heads removed) and band-sawed part of the remainder of the big end to form the appropriate crescent shape. Its ugly, but it works.

Wilding Engineering...(The guy that makes/sells the fancy porsche engine/floor jack adapters) makes a pretty darn hefty looking version of the 65-74 wrench for a competitive price...perhaps Eugene could look into carrying those.

In a pinch, I used an oil filter wrench (one for smaller filters). It kinda bent up because only half the wrench band went around the pully, but it worked. If it makes anyone feel any better about the Pelican wrench, when I first got my car, I bought the Wrong one from Pelican. So, not only did I spend the $$, but I now have a useless early 911 wrench in the garage. I suppose its time I put it in the classifieds. Oh well.

Maybe it wasn't on tight enough, but I held the fan blades with my bare hands while a friend loosened up the pulley nut.

This is one of those cases where improvisation can get it done quickly ... try an impact wrench while an assistant holds a new fan belt wrapped around the pulley ... gripped tight with Channel-Locs ...
Save s a lot of time waiting on the UPS or FedEx truck ...
