I'm getting nailed with fixes

Well, here's what needs to be done:
- Windshield leaks at the corners, still chasing with silicone
- Tranny is making a growling sound when driving
- Alternator is about shot
- Front end needs to be tightened up somehow. It feels loose.
- Just failed emissions inspection
- Some kind of antenae (the PO replaced the windshield with one that doesn't have an antenae)
- Front valance looks like crap...tons of stone chips
- Sunroof is also leaking

Dang! Since I started driving it this year I've realized that a lot of $$ are going to fly out the window this summer. I know these things are a blast to drive but when so many things converge at the same time it really sucks!

On a positive note, just installed:
- New alarm
- Quart Reference speakers
- Tires (Yoko ES 100s)
- Plugs
- Dist. cap and rotor
- Hood shock
- License plate bracket

Not really anything to comment on. Just tired of dropping money into it.

Welcome to the Porsche Owners Club! What's your question?

Seriously, that's pretty much par for the course. Don't they say the trick isn't so much being able to buy a Porsche, but being able to maintain and insure it?

Look at it from this point of view... the car is 15 years old. If you fix those mostly very minor things they will be like new. If your trans needs to be rebuilt, it's a new trans... Most likely its one of your CV joints out of whack. A reletively easy and cheap thing to DIY. The front end probably needs tie rods... Also reletively cheap and easy DIY... The great thing is... When they are done they are done... it's part of the game.

Welcome to the Machine

That's OK, Mine's Screwed

Rear tire that is. Nice wake up to find a flat just as we start getting some nice weather. The sidewall looked pretty dried out as it sat there on the rim.

To top it off there is loads of construction in the neighborhood, and on the way to work. Not too inclined to go purchase some new skins at this point. Likelihood of finding another screw in a new tires is unsettling.

Went from the flat to polishing the wheels without getting back on the road. 5 days later I'm still into the project.

Hang in there and keep in mind, if you do it right it will last a long time add up to a solid car at some point.

Good luck, Gordo

Number one on the list, is that everything on your "Honey-Do" list with the wife is on long term hold.

Does she hate the car yet?

All the more reason to keep it.

As I often say to my wife,

"I didn't buy this car to be thrifty."

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

I guess the biggest thing on the list is the tranny (or maybe the CV joints). The other stuff is just annoying.

G-

When does your growl occur? If it is more pronounced when turning a particular direction, it is definitely a CV joint, perhaps both. If one was bad, I would probably do both, just to be on the safe side... (kinda, "while your there")...

Does your growl become more pronounced the faster you go? Might be bearings. Although, usually that's more of a whine sound...

If none of the above is occuring, try swapping fluid for some swepco in the box... Usually, when a trans is on the way out shifting becomes a problem, but you might have some other issue going on in there. Does it do it in all gears?

The growling may be a chipped gear in the trans.
I'll PM you the name of the piant guy in East Hanover.

Did you decide on an alternator rebuild?

Geof, My car is an '85. Does that mean it's 17 years old?

It does it in all gears, usually above 15 mph I hear it. Not more pronounced when cornering. Doesn't get considerably louder the faster I go. Shifting isn't a problem in any gear though first can be a little dodgy when the car is cold.

Owning the car is just the entrance fee.....

Working on the car yourself just gives you a sense of unexplainable pride.
