Help om transmission oil change

Hi there

Ive decided it is now time to change the transm oil. I have no idea if its ever been done or not, so decided to do it and be on the safe side. The car '80 911 sc has 150k km on the clock, and is in good mechanical condition. The clutch however seems to need some attention. So i'll start with the oil.

Do I just remove the drain plug, and the plug on the side (which I presume is where you refill it again, hopefully after I remember top refit the drain plug!!) and let it drain? Should I drain it with the engine at operating temp?

Is the above procedure correct? Any thing else I should do, or look out for?

Hi Marius,

I'd advise you to try and remove the FILL plug first! You don't want to drain all your tranny oil then find out you can't get the fill plug out!

Get the car warmed up, this will help the oil flow better.

What oil are you putting back in? Swepco 201 would be a good choice for your SC's 915 box.

Cheers,

Tim.

Tim

Good advice, wouldnt want to be caught in the situation where the fill plug cant get out! I did not even think of that.

I'm still going to buy the oil, but will go for the swepco.

Thank's for your help, and enjoy your day

It is a good idea to drain the old fluid and then install some cheap gear oil. Drive the car for ~100 miles, then drain the cheap oil that has served to flush the gear box. Then add then add the SWEPCO.

Also, Snap On sells a great tool that has a 17mm hex and 3/8" drive end and is about 1" long.

Where do you by Swepco 201 in the UK Tim, as I am just wondering if it would be available in Holland as well.

Cheers,

Hi Gerko,

You can get Swepco from most UK Porsche parts dealers, www.berlyn-services.co.uk , www.type-911.co.uk

Cheers,

Tim.

Save yourself the 30 Pounds, and put in valvoline or another quality Dino oil with 1/3 of a quart of 75w90ns redline. I have been trying different oils in my tranny, and this was the best feel for the best price. Certainly much smoother than the Swepco that I had been using.

And for the drain plug tool, it is the same one that is used in the VW transmissions, so it is probably easily obtainable from a speed shop or a discount VW place - I got mine for $3.99.

A few bits of advice:

Warm the tranny by driving it for 30 minutes prior to draining.

Remove the fill plug first, nothing is worse than having drained the tranny to find out you can't refill it.

While you are waiting the 20-30 minutes for the oil to drain, warm your new oil in a pan of hot water to help it flow better.

Wow, do you guys really get the tranny that hot before you drain it. Man, it must be hot down there. Fortunately the exhaust doesn't run past the tranny like it does in a front engine rear drive.

Also wipe off the entire area on and above the fill plug. Nothing like seeing a big chunk of grease and dirt accidentally disappear in there.

You only need to do that if you use Swepco since it is so thick.
