Battery relocation / soldering tips

I am going to move the battery to the smugglers box using the WEVO box. The only part of the install I am not comfortable with is the lengthening of the accessory power cables so that they can also be rerouted to the smugglers box. The instructions call for the existing wires to be cut and a new pieces of wire to be soldered in to lengthen the cable.

Not having much soldering experieince, any hints on this part of the process?

Here's the technique I would use with a good flux core solder (60/40 Rosin core (NOT acid core)) or solder and separate fluxing. Also a good hot iron and shrink tubing. Remember to put the tubing on before you make the union.

Or check this out.... Best technique for soldering

The "western Union" joint is an interesting coupling.

Rick:

GREAT pictures. Very descriptive.

The trick I've found is to be sure to get the joint hot enough so that the solder flows in evenly. This requires patience. Resist the urge just to heat the solder and "glob" it on to the joint. Take your time, get the joint nice and hot, and allow the solder to flow in. Then pull the heat shrink tubing over the joint and heat it with a heat gun. Your joints will be safe and secure!

Absolutely....let it flow!

Let the joint absorb the liquid solder to the point of saturation. I find that putting a bit of extra tinning on the hot iron will hasten the heating of the joint.

Also, a good solder joint includes a secure mechanical connection as a sound foundation.

BTW, Credit for the pics go to a guy who has a Jaguar restoration site. Sorry I can't recall the address.

This inexpensive tool, commonly referred to as the "Third Hand" is a huge help with this type of joint.

I think most hobby shops sell them. I got mine from Harbor Freight. They also have a magnifying glass attached to them.
