Not a big fan

Last week had the valves adjusted. Few days ago I developed a 'squeak' which has become progressively worse. After a cursory inspection I thought it was the fan belt which was a couple of years old and a little worn, so I replaced it. Sqeak still there, on closer inspection seems to be coming from the passenger side cylinder bank.

Sqeak increases in volume and speed with engine revs, road speed is irrelevant.

Could this be anything to do with the valve adjust? Any ideas?

Not very likely to be valve-related!!!

You changed the fan belt ... now the alternator bearings are complaining a bit??? Confirm by getting a large wooden dowel (or mechanic's stethoscpe) and probe the alternaor as source, around the fan housing ...

Could also be cracked fan housing ...

The squeak was there before I changed the belt, that was why I changed it!

Why would the fan housing sqeak if it was cracked? Will have another look around...

run it without the belt for a few minutes. not valve related unless the tech trapped the shop rodent in there.

Nigel,

Old, glazed fan belts can squeak ... fresh new belts don't usually squeak, but if slightly too tight, they can cause extra stress on the fan housing, which, if cracked ... can distort enough to cause the longest fan blade to rub on the housing, and squeak/chirp ...

Of course, the alternator bearings can whine/squeak/chirp or make complaining noises when the belt is too tight!

As John, said ... run it without the belt for a couple of minutes and rule out all of the above, if it is something else ...

Maybe a long shot, but if you have carbs, might be a possibility. I had a car (VW) a long time ago. It developed a sound on one side that changed with the RPMs. It wasn't quite a squeaking sound, but more of a chirping sound. I couldn't figure it out, and a friend told me to try tightening the intake manifold nuts. I did this while the engine was idling & chirping. When I tightened one of the nuts, the sound disappeared. It was air being sucked into the manifold. I was happy, because I could have burned a vavle too.

Thanks for all your help guys, I intend to have a good look around over the weekend.

Hadn't thought of the water-pump bearings. Will I have to remove both superchargers to get to it?

Just an FYI, the aftermarket belts seem to squeak after a while. After reading somewhere on this board that Porsche brand belts are actually about one-half to 1 millimeter smaller in width, I tried one - the difference was amazingly ---------quiet.
