Porsche Crest My new CIS airbox cover.

I just completed my new carbon fiber airbox cover. I made the plugs, molds, and parts in my spare time. It's made from Toray pre-impregnated carbon fiber and is vacuum cured at 260 degrees. It's completely waterproof and has ten square inches of air intake. It fits the filter and lower airbox much better than the stock cover.

I am considering manufacturing them if there is enough interest.
Take a look and let me know what you think.

Very nice, what does it say on top of the box?

That's sweet !! How did you cure it at such a high temp? Do you have an autoclave?

I work for a small aerospace composites company and I vacuum bag cured it in an oven. We have two autoclaves but since I was working under the cloak of darkness I opted for oven cure. I will try a clave cure when I can sneak my parts in with a batch of production parts.

Nice work, Dave.

Do you notice any difference with the engine; power, sound, etc.?

The cover looks great, but from the pictures I can't tell where the openings are for the air to enter. Obviously they are there, but where?

Does it enter all the way around in the channel near the top and into the rectangular holes on the inside of the cover. Or is that what it looks like before you cut a hole into the side? How much?

interest

Yes, very interested although that interest could be quickly dampened by the cost...:-) Looks awesome...any idea of what pricing would be like? Really dresses up the engine bay and still adds function. Great work!

This is the best looking version i have seen.
Great job.
Let us know what cost will be.

Mike, Its made in 2 parts and bonded together. Air enters through the channel on all 4 sides and up through the cut outs. I will have to make minor tooling changes to lower production costs. As its made now it would sell for around 350 bucks.

If you sell the car, you can always use it as a planter for your bonzai.

Actually, it is very nice work. And, if you can slip different letters in your mold to personalize each one, I bet you could get $350 a copy.

Oven? Like the oven in your kitchen? Okay, I'm stupid about this stuff so I have to ask...wouldn't 260 degrees melt the plastic in the vacuum bag? Please excuse me if these questions are beyond ignorant. I've never made a carbon fiber anything...

The plastic bagging is good to 400 degrees F. The oven is a 6 ft. x 6 ft. x 10 ft. industrial walk in. Although it flows more air than stock I do not feel any power increase and as far as sound goes I can't tell because I have SSI's and a dual outlet Monty.

i dont think you will feel an increase due to airflow. the airsensor plate seems to be the limiting factor when it comes to allowing air flow.

VERY nice design! I'd bet you could sell quite a few in that design just using fiberglass also.

It does look nice. $350 ain't cheap thought. If you could get the price down, you may have more takers.
