international shipping from pelican - wayne?

I just ordered some stuff on Pelican from the uk and was quoted various different shipping rates to choose from. I went for the cheapest - obviously! Which was about US$35.

I complete the order.

Then I get an email from Pelican saying shipping will be US$69, do I want to proceed!!??!!

I wont go into the rest of the dialogue, but what gives? I made the order already in the first instance or so I thought??

Does the ordering system need updating or something? Just thought i'd share - it may save someone becoming disgruntled with an overseas order in future.

btw - this is a one off - i usually get great overseas service from Pelican.

Hi Rich

I'd be very interested to hear how this pans out. Nothing like Pelican here in the UK.

Also watch out for the VAT man taking his slice - good company to deal with in europe is http://www.mittelmotor.de/english/startenglish.htm.
Found them pretty good to say the least.

Rob: It's bad form to post links to Pelican's competition, even if it's in Europe. Next time it would probably be best to send an e-mail.

Scott - Its not pelican's fault that anything we purchase from America - over 40% is added to the price due to import taxes and vat - I would say bad form is using this forum and never having made a purchase from Pelican

i have to agree with rob. it is more expensive to buy from anywhere in the states for us uk guys (because of import taxes) - i just make a point of ordering from Pelican in support of the board. in fact Pelican is pretty much the only US supplier i use now.

i must say though that pelican is one US supplier where i dont tend to get caught for taxes on import - i think it is to do with their shippers.

My point was that it's bad form to discuss competition for Wayne/Pelican, even if less expensive. You can accomplish your goal of sharing information on less expensive vendors by e-mail or private message. Wayne has a significant financial investment in this board, and he provides it to us free of charge. He's entitled to use it as a business development tool, and deserves to not have people discuss other vendors.

Anyway, my $.02. Not trying to get into a flame war here.

scott

you're missing the point my friend. we live in the UK! buying from anywhere in the US is probably more expensive than anywhere in the UK, and i would not expect anyone in the US to buy from the UK for the same reason.

i choose to support Pelican because it provides this great board in spite of the fact that it costs me more - not less.

a side note is that some UK vendors may provide hard to get items for US customers.

however, none of this was the point of my original post.

This is precisely my point, Rich. While I'm sympathetic to the increased costs due to your being on the other side of the pond, I think any discussion of Wayne's competitors, even one in Europe, should best be left to e-mail or private messages.

I don't mean to offend my British bretheren, so I'll shut up now!

A simple try to get back to the original question... I must say I love Pelican! I browse this board every day and I have a large project list in the webshop... But ther could be some more information about what it will cost before I have tha parts in my hand. Shipping, VAT, import taxes etc... Since I live in a small country we have no local competition what so ever. Our only real option is to by things abroad... So far I have not bought anything from Pelican, but I'm sure I going to!

/Christian
