915 Tranny w/$200 Stomski coupler

So I put the Seine system shifter kit on my car, along with a shift rod bushing and a complete new coupler from Pelican.

I should be happy having spent $200 instead of $2,000 for a tranny rebuild and getting some major improvements while buying some time.

I cannot help but wonder in awe about the huge difference that changing the coupler, which did not look worn, and upgrading the shifter, which still has most of it's original internal parts, really made.

Here is my question, has anyone tried the Stomski Racing coupler? It's $200, verses a couple of bucks for new bushings, or a whole new factory coupler for about $50 (which I just did).

I usualy follow the rule; if it's not broke, don't fix it. However curiosity is killing the cat on this one.

This is the missing peice to my shifter rebuild. I replaced the Shift Bushing, Cup and put in a short shift kit. The shifter does not want to go into gear and I am now thinking I should have done the coupler too although it didn't seem lose or worn. Kach, did the coupler help with gear selection?

It's not clear if anybody knows. Most posters are excitied by the improvement but are comparing to a worn stock coupler. It's just like the tire comparisons often posted -- new Brand G tires are compared to Brand Q.... BUT the poster does not realize that Brand Q tires are not new, instead what is really being compared is new tires to old, hard and worn ones. This is why we need to push the magazines to do some comparisons for us instead of taking trips to Germany to drive the new million buck ultra-car....

I am very happy with my Stomski coupler. The one thing I would bet on is that the factory coupler will wear much faster than the Stomski. So with the latter you get longer life, reliability in addition to any added precision. Do track dedicated P-cars use the factory coupler? If not there is a reason.

Look into the archives on this BBS and search for bushings, etc...you'll find the $200 Stomski bushing is the $64 or so aircraft style coupling available from Aircraft Spruce and Suppy....slightly modified.

Good one;
Shift coupler for 915?

Build your own coupler?
Stromski Shift Coupler a Winner

I will keep the set up I have for now, as there are far to many things on my to do list, without being side tracked.

I built a shift coupler using the Apex coupler.

Homebrew shift coupler

I only spotwelded the shaft to the coupler, and it broke. I ended up having to run a bead around the entire joint. I am seriously considering the Wevo shifter to achieve the ultimate 915 setup.

Well, there are those that will give many reasons why bronze bushings are a bad idea but I machined a set for my coupler and it works fantastic. You get a little more noise but not much. There is absolutely no slop in mine.

I broke my OEM coupler trying to get the pin out & was really pissed. I couldn't see spending $80 on another flimsy aluminum POS, so I bought the Wevo coupler & shifter & have no regrets.

Paul,

How are the Wevo units working out for you? I've built up some P-car play money and was thinking of doing the Wevo coupler/shifter or go for 22/28 t-bars and new shocks/struts if needed.

Am I the only guy who runs a stock coupler and think it shifts well? I did try a short shift kit and THAT made it shift poorly. Not enough throw to work the gates in the shifter properly. Went back to stock shifter and gotta admit it's good. I just don't think it's worth too much on the track or street to whip off shifts. Once I got good at heel toeing the downshifts my 915 feels totaly fine. Not the best tranny on earth but I own the car for it's other features!

Alex, did you use the factory short shifter? The factory short shifter does not alter lateral distance between gates-only throw. I did like the factory short shifter, but I didn't like the increased force. I am currently using the Rennshifter, but I want to try the Wevo unit. I'll probably audition all shifters once again (stock, factory short shift, Rennshifter, Wevo). Alex, have you ever tried the upgraded couplers?

Rick, it works great. Feels like butter, no slop what so ever. Probable the best upgrade I've done so far. Looks good too.
