I have an acquaintance saying his friend had a 912 with some kind of removable hardtop. Just trying to get the straight answer.

I'm no expert, but I'm quite positive they made targa 912s. Here's one...

I owned a 1967 912 Targa for 4 glorious weeks. A school bus put an end to it
![]() It looked like this just before I bought it:

No. The first 911 Cabriolet (Convertible) was an '83 911 SC. Many converted from Targas to Cabs using factory or aftermarket parts.

The big mystery is whether or not there was a 912E Targa. This is the only picture I know of, and there's no way to tell if it's really a 912:

no it's not...it's a short wheelbase car, and it's got the silver targa bar...the silver bar was out by '76, no?
steel wheels as well...look to be 15x5.5's..it's a deeper dish. sjd

steel wheels were stock on the 912E.
why do you say its a swb? it has the impact bumper which is post 74.. as far as the targa bar goes.. i have no clue.

I was mostly going off of the fact that it was a silver targa bar...which added believability to the early car ponderings...I managed to miss the bumpers...just overlooking the obvious again.
I just can't remember what year the silver targa bar stopped and the black ones started. sjd

There were 912 Targas ... almost from Day 1 of 912 and Targa production ... and the 'soft' window version got a lot of press in the early days ... and advertising attention, compared to later, say, 1969+ production Targa models!
It would be fairly easy to confuse a soft-window Targa fully open [which of the four 'modes' was that?] with a convertible, IMHO!

According to the 912 registry, however... "Porsche constructed a total of 2562 912 Targas, less than 8 percent of all 912s. Targas first came equipped with flexible plastic rear windows ('soft-windows') openable with a zipper; the glass rear window was an option starting in 1968." They also claim that there are reports of two 912E targas being produced. Possibly the one in your picture is one of them.
