change hose without draining oil?
 

I just received my new hose from our host that goes from the hard line to the thermostat and I wondering if it can be changed without draining the oil.
I was planning to jack the passenger side of the car up real high and try it but I wanted to hear from anyone who's BTDT first.

i thought about it, but i drained the oil first. even then it is just like the shores of alaska. very messy. especially if you actually have to monkey around with it some. i would scream if i had to get that sucker's thread started while oil was streaming out. to tell you the truth, i had to change the same line right after i dumped in 11 quarts of kendall 20-50, this was due to an defective line during my external cooler install. painful

Geez Sammy, it's just 10qts of oil....

It's a scavenge line, guys, and the pump isn't putting anything out when the engine is off ... a cup is about the most that could be spilled!!!

The only 'Alaska pipeline' on the engine is the supply line to the pressure pump ... AKA the 'S-hose' from the tank ...

a drain pan below each fitting should do the trick. they'll drool of course, so don't waste too much time.

Your right Red-beard, it's just 10 quarts, but it's 10 quarts of oil that has about 200 miles on it.
I don't mind buying more oil but it's a pain to get rid of. With my oil changes from the 911, the pick-em-up and the wife's car the guys at the FLAPS think I'm pulling oil out of the ground. ;)

I don't work in the refinery business and more so I can't take it there, Last time I dropped off the used oil at pep boys I had about 10 gallons and they started asking questions.

LOL....the recycler that gets my used oil gives me funny looks too, Sammy.

Warren is right..as a second "sample"..I removed/installed my entire cooling system w/o draining the engine or the tank....I had to drain the lines to prevent them from drooling all over the place, but since nothing is rotating...no moving oil. I think I lost less than a quart.

can i take this another step? looks like i got a new oil leak from my sump pump gasket. i at least hope so, because the other leakable areas nearby would be the crankcase halves split. and that would be depressing. i can just drain the motor right? should save me more than half my oil? like sam above, my oil is brandnew from my tensioner upgrade a week ago.

Cliff, You can just drain the oil in the sump but the oil in the tank will try to seek it's own level and may eventually seep into the sump. It'll prolly happen slowly so it shouldn't stop you from fixing the sump cover gasket. Just don't leave it open overnight (please don't ask me how I know) :(

I recommend that tightening the drain plate nuts be done with a small combination box-end wrench ... gripped with only four fingers -- snugged-up against the box-end on the nut ... very little chance of over-tightening the nuts that way!

thanks warren, sam! i will do that. i assume the graphite gasket it the best one? i have to admit, i think i got confused the last time i torqued everything down. tuff to remember what nut i was just on. maybe i will get anal and put tape with numbers on it.

as i understand it, the case seal doesnt typically leak?
