getting what they give, tailgaters
I thought I would just take a poll to see if there are others like me out there, one of pet peeves, is tailgaters.
I often on a drive home, on my two lane twisty road, come up on two cars, one behind the other, with the second car tailgating the car in front. I keep my distance to be polite. Sometimes the second car is really obnoxious, if this is the case, sometimes the first car will be intimidated into pulling over. If this happens, I will on occasion (OK almost always) take the opportunity give a little back for the first car and tailgate the now new lead car. It is just my way of letting the obnoxious driver know in the big picture, they too are slower than the car behind them....Never have I had the obnoxious driver concede and pullover to let me through. Just interested to see if it is just me.... It happen just yesterday while driving my 1970 911 w 3.2Lhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/splat.gif I will also add I have had the opposite happen, when in my 996 with aero kit, I have cars pull over and way me by, even if I keep my distance. |
Thats when you need 4 HID rally lights on the front of the car :D

Now that I have my P-car, it seems I get even more tailgaters just waiting to smash my motor. Is just me, or am I entering the Twilight Zone?
|
No, it's not your imagination. More people mess with you in the pcar than in the others especially cabs. Even more so on a bike. My parents have a navigator though, so I take my revenge on taxis in it. I'll drive next to them, slightly ahead of them, and just slowly pull into their lane. I can't describe the feeling of satisfaction at feeding them some of their own pain.

I pull over and let the tailgaters go. They punch a nice hole in traffic for me. Life is too short to waste "educating" all the A-holes in the world. OK, I will admit to um coming up fast on them in the off ramps after letting them pass. I don't actually speed up to do this, I just don't slow down. ;) Remember the yellow "45mph" off ramp sign is a suggested speed. :D

Next thing worse than one jackass is two. It ain't worth it; eventually you will end up with bent sheet metal and/or a hurt body. On average the intelligence of men and women is about the same but women have the advantage of not having their's blunted by excessive amounts of testosterone. Jim

It pisses me off because it is illegal to pass more than one car at a time and the tailgater won't leave enough room between himself and the slow car holding up progress for me to pass him (and subsequently the slow car).
Here in the highly metropolitan North Alabama it is common for people to drive along on two lane roads at a fraction of posted limit. Kills me... Mike |
I'd never get home if I could only pass one car at a time. That law sux!!!

I am practicing self- control now but yesterday I almost got out of the car and stuck the Merceds Logo up somebody's back side for tailgating me so close. Road rage is so hard to stay away from. People are so stupid out there. I tested the braking distance on my Jetta yesterday going from 60-0 in about 100 or so feet becuase of some a## changing a tire in the middle of the road instead of being smart enough to pull over to the shoulder - they should take away licenses for idiots and also install the cruise control feature that slows cars down when they approach the car in front of them too closely.

No, the best one is when you're stopped at a light headed uphill, and the GMC pickup stops right behind you. I mean RIGHT behind you. (Sunday) Third drive in my new toy. Do ya think I've mastered the clutch and throttle response yet? I'm good,,,,not that good!!!!!
|
I stay away from them. The Porsche is a sculpture, a work of art.

Oh jeez, tell me about it. It's terrible in La la land. Sometimes I can't see over the tail gaters front hood their so close to me. All I see is the manufacturer emblem. I give 'em a bad look or slow down and they usually get the point to back the #$%^ off. Sometimes I get so mad I want to brake hard and give them a good scare... dangerous... yes... fun... maybe... :D

I'd have to admit that i've tailgated before, usually out of rage when some idiot cuts me off for no reason. It's not the best of sollutions, i know. Usually the only time i get people tailgating me are when idiots want to try and street race with me. BTW, did i mention there are a lot of idiots on the road?

In L.A. traffic, tailgaters are an evil a driver can't get away from. And shifting a car, particularly one with a 915 gearbox, is a tailgaters' lunch.
I've almost been rear-ended so many times now, this is the single reason why I probably won't be putting fiberglass bumpers on my car. :( |
That is what the windshield washers are for.

Here in good ol' DC area everyone tailgates! If you don't, someone will fill in that 1 car length hole you left "by mistake." I've lived in many states and Maryland drivers will never cease to amaze me with their lack of skill and politeness!! Utter idiots and jerks (almost all anyway). Make SoCal look nice! And NYC not so crazy. (except manhattan of course)

for the stopping on the hill problem, I will often look in the mirror and see if I suspect I will have a problem, if so I will on stoppng forward motion let the car roll back a few feet right away , this pretty much lets them know I couild roll back, so they leave romm most of the ime.
But I was asking about a specific tailgater situation, has anyone ever had a tailgater in front of them, concede to them, as the faster car? again not on a multilane road, that stuff is impossible to avoid I agree, and letting them go past is the best solution. Jim |
nah, because that would require me to tailgate, and if I hit them, it's my fault right?
However, I followed someone yesterday, after he rode the shoulder, cut a few folks off, changed 3 lanes at once, all to gain one car length after a mile or so. I kept staring him down from behind, so he got freaked out and blew 2 stop signs to get away from me. I wasn't following close or being aggressive at all, just matching every turn. Probably not the smartest thing to do but I just can't help myself... |

Although I did grow up in a hilly town- I guess if you drive in the flatlands all the time its never an issue. |
You gotta let people know that you are paying the cost to be the Boss. If they want to venture into the world of high performance, take them there. I.E., over 120+ MPH and move up from there.
I took a WRX into that world not too long ago. While he kept up for a while, his so called turbo was screaming. If he'd kept up the pace, it would have caused some damage to his car. The 911 just hummed along. |
