Being a newbie to the site, I'm hopeful to throw this question out without stirring up the shock/strut debate again. It seems that this group generally favors Bilsteins but does anyone have any experience with the newer KYB shocks or struts? The last post I found was a couple of years old and rated them as a "plain jane" shock and "not suitable for any track use".
I see that KYB now offers the AGX adjustable series which probably wasn't available the last time this question was posted. The link below is to the product description at the Tire Rack site. I've gotten plenty of useful info on other suspension issues from this site (and much apprecaite it!) and realize that shocks/struts are but one piece of the puzzle. While I'm not new to performance vehicles by any stretch I am a rookie in the P-car world who is just learning this particular craft so, any thoughts or recent experiences with KYB would be appreciated. http://www.tirerack.com/suspension/suspension.jsp?make=KYB&model=AGX+Adjustable&group=AGX+Adjustable

Tire Rack isn't showing these as available for a 911 when I searched?

I didn't bother to see if TR listed them for 911 or not - was told that KYB did offer applications for 911 but, am still trying to run that down. My gut feel with TR is that other than straight tire and wheel apps, most everything else is geared toward the tuner crowd.
Ok, I give - who is Stan Hanks?

I'd be interested too, as I had good results with KYB on another car. Tire Rack list the rears only, but at only $31 each I guess they're disposable!

I e-mailed one of the suspension houses that handles KYB and was told that "currently, KYB does not make any AGX products for any Porsche applications".
Sorry folks, guess my original source was wrong and I should have done the homework before posting.

Stan Hanks is the guy who started the very first Porsche mailing list back around 1993 or so (porschephiles). He was a character, needless to say. He was a advocate of KYBs...

The set of KYB's the previous owner put on my '73 911 didn't last 5,000 miles before they lost their gas charge and blew out the oil. Before that, they were just like mikez says - a cheap, cruddy shock that made a smooth road rougher than cobblestones.
You get what you pay for most of the time. In the case of the KYB's you don't even get that. Jim '73 911 with new Koni's 4 years ago and no problems |
