Does this sound like a broken head stud?
 

I am looking at a 911 and the owner described a problem with the car listed below.....Does this sound like a broken stud???if so, how much for repair?


Has a problem that we think could be a broken cylinder head stud but we have not checked it out. it sounds like the exhaust is blowing and on deceleration it pops slightly

it's easy to check...just pull the valve covers.

I just saw that car on ebay. If they mention it you can bet that they know what the problem is, as that sentence knocks about 4,000 off the ebay selling price.

The car looks pretty clean and I was thinking if I can win it at 7500.00 and put 2,000 in it for the head stud issue.....but you are saying its about 4,000K to repair????

popping under deceleration can be either an exhaust leak or too much gas in the cylinders which is completely normal and acceptible on any 911 until '84. In '84 the DME cuts the fuel to the engine completely on deceleration, so if a 3.2 pops on decel when your foot is not on the gas it either has an exhaust leak or a leaky fuel injector.

Can you do the work yourself? If not, I can't imagine it would be less than 3 or 4,000 @ a CA shop.

I have a slight pop (more like loud ticks) under hard deceleration too, and my headstuds are all tight (I checked). This is ... normal for an SC with CIS.

just make the deal contigent on a PPI. And during the PPI have them check the head studs. It will cost you a bit extra (for the valve cover gaskets and oil change), but worth it from a bargaining perspective if any are broken. but of course one could go the week after you get it so there are not absolutes...

How hard is this job to do yourself???I am a moderate capability in mechanics, just I never worked on a 911 engine before........I take it, the hardest part is dropping the engine out???

I think thats the easiest bit. With this board & Waynes engine book, its definitely doable.

doing it yourself is a BIG job with no experience. I would almost certainly have a go if you have the time to take your time. My biggest mistake was not knowing about this place before doing my 75 2.7s.
I poured over £1300 (about $2300!) into rebuilding my engine that had two pulled studs. because of lack of knowledge I ONLY had the damaged stud threads repaired. 4 months later (thats how long it took to rebuild!) I pulled to more studs on the other side of the engine.

three words- KNOWLEDGE IS EVERYTHING!

Having told you of my nitemare job I would still urge you to give it a go though. Im now on my second engine, a 3.3 turbo, but this time I have waynes book and this website to give me the confidence that i need to do the job right
