Newbie Needs More Input

If you had 30-35K to spend (my price target continues to creep up), would you put your money on a low mileage 88-89 Carerra, a 92-93 964, or higher mileage 993.

the carrera

The Carrera. You can get a very nice car for $20,000 and plan on spending $5-6K fixing all the things that need attention to make it all work, look nice, etc. $35K for a 993 is going to absorb your whole budget. Remember, its not just how much the beast costs, but you also have to afford to feed it. Better to put a few dollars aside for maintenance, upgrades and repairs.

My $0.02

You can get a low miles 87-88 for mid to upper 20's and have money left over to play (translation upgrade and modify).

Go the airbag 964. Last of the real 911's and everything works like a normal car.

I think we need to know more about what you're going to do with it. I.E. mods, autocross, track days, etc.

No we don't - a 964 will do it all. With the AC on.;)

993.

But really, they feel different, so drive some and buy what you really like.

If you want raw sportscar, get an SC or Carrera and have money to spare for the repairs. If you want gorgeous GT/track weapon, get an early 993 for 30-35K and drive the most beautiful car ever manufactured (IMO).

Personally, I'd get a 993.

You can't go wrong either way, but they drive very differently. Have you tried a sample of each?

Rot 911 05-06-2004 06:40 PM

I'm going against the flow here. If you can set aside another 2-4K in the next few months I would buy the 993 and then budget for future repairs

Victor 05-06-2004 07:41 PM

Whatever you do don't come back here if you bought an SC.

David 05-06-2004 08:05 PM

OK, ya'll have changed my opinion also. Don't ask us, go drive them all. This is obviously a big purchase and driving them is the only way to tell what you could be happy with. Be sure and drive at least a couple of each since some could be in disrepair.

Go 964. Its like a modern G-series, retains the look of an earlier 911 yet is just like a newer car, because it is.

$30-35K budget:

you can get a low mileage, well maintaned, excellent condition 964

test drive both cars a 964 and a late 80's carrera.

the late 80's carreras are nice but the 964 is a very modern driving car, very similar to the 993.
