Question '74 CIS Fuel Distributor

'74 911 2.7l Fuel Distributor:

Does anyone know how to check if a fuel distributor is operating correctly??? Has anyone rebuilt DIY this item??? Where can a person get replacement parts for it??? Does anyone know of a GOOD rebuilder of these units and at a reasonable price??? These cost about $1,100 new. Any hints on saving $$$.???

Thanks,
Hz

these units don't really break...what they can get is gummed up inside so that the plunger is stuck. the fuel distributor has to be removed, disassembled and cleaned. you certainly shouldn't have to buy a new one...that's the good news.

Try specialtauto.com - If you can't rebuild yours or don't feel comfortable trying you can buy a rebuilt one and send in your old one for the core charge.

HZ, what is going on with the car, that makes you suspect the FD?

i just read your other thread. if you pushed the airsensor bar and you felt any resistance then your FD is probably ok. if the plunger was stuck, you would feel ZERO resistance, like the arm was a perfectly balance arm, which it is.

'74 911 won't idle

The sensor plate, when lifted upward, has some resistence and I guess you're correct as it must be good, since it does move. A frozen center plunger in the fuel dist. would NOT allow any movement. I will change out the fuel filt. soon and try to run again. Someone mentioned to me that excess rust in the gas tank caused their 911 to do the same(start up and die). I'll remove the float assembly next and take a peek if the filt. doesn't do it.

Thanks for the note.

Hz.
