distributor shims in KC...holy grail?
Hoping for some help from KC Pelicans, but appreciate info from anybody. I'm rebuilding my dist. and I'm looking to replace the shims while I'm in there. So far, I have been to every auto parts store, and a few industrial supply places and they all just shake their heads and say..."ain't never seen anything like that before...maybe car quest has 'em". Also, places on the internet can make them...but only in huge lot orders. Just short of hitting every industrial supply place in the phone book, I thought I'd ask here. Basically, I'm looking for polished stainless steel shims of the following dimension:
25mm OD / 12 mm ID (thickness unknown, but about like a heavy sheet of paper) 20mm OD / 12 mm ID (a little thicker...say a post card) 14mm OD / 8 mm ID (about the same thickness as a post card) The bigger shims need an ID that is the same diameter of the dist shaft...and my little ruler says about 12mm but definetly smaller than 13mm. If anyone has a line on these, I'd like to order a 1/2 doz of each for future rebuilds. Ideally a local supplier would be great, but any source that has them will work as well... R/ Dustin |

Dustin,
In decades past ... you could find such shims and fiber washers [and brushes for motors] at a full-line hardware store, but no more! The last such hardware store here went out of business about 15 years ago -- after the old gentleman passed away at 90+ years ... and nothing like that store exists as a chain store franchise. Try a motor/generator rebuilding shop ... some don't want to deal with individuals for such small purchases, but there are exceptions!

Warren,
Exactly...unfortunately I have been reminded of that from the blank looks I've been getting around town. Actually, my dist. overhaul was inspired a response you posted in 2001! Glad I did it. If nothing else, I'll just keep looking. The old ones aren't completely gone, but they'll have to get swapped out at the next maint interval, which I will do at each valve adjustment...
