Low oil temps?

Hi all,

My 71T 2.2 never seems to get very hot. Probably the highest temp I've had the car out in is maybe in the low 70's, but I've never seen the temp gauge go higher than about 160-170. It does respond to outside air temp (lower on cold days, etc.) so I think the gauge is working. Senders seem ok.

Is this a problem, or am I just lucky not to have everheating problems?

The oil should get warm enough to vaporize contaminents (water & fuel). Normally the temp necessary to do that will be closer to 210.

If you usually see 160-170 then that's probably fine, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if your gauge or sender is not quite right or you've got a bad connection someplace.

My 87' Carrera never goes beyond 170 degrees and hits about 185 if it's been idling awhile. I even backdated the gauge/sender and get the same readings. I haven't had the car long enough to have driven it in weather above 70 degrees, however.

You may have a oil cooler thermostat that is stuck open and it is circulating the oil too soon.

Already checked that on my 87'. All the tubing in front of the oil thermostat is cool. How hot does your 87' run at 70 degrees outside temperature?

I bought it last fall right after the weather turned cool. Mine has been running anywhere from 140-185 depending on the temp outside. I'm currently checking to see why it won't go above 145-150 when the outside temp is 45-50 degrees. When its warm out, it will go up to 175-185 and stay steady.

Well I replaced the oil thermostat, and still get about the same temps, maybe a little higher, but still below 180. The oil pressure is a little lower. I'll have to see what it does in warmer weather.

Do you guys have the standard 120-300F temp gauges?

I have the standard gauge where the numbers are off to the side just out of view (in celsius).
