Roof rack for a targa

Does anyone know of a roof rack that will work on a 1978 Targa. Would like to take some longer trips with the son and wife while using the targa. A roof rack would really help. As it stands I can pack some luggage and my sons support equipment but then I have no place to put the roof. Thanks

I assume you'd take the roof off when getting to your final destination and removing the roof rack.

Here are factory option codes. Perhaps option 9508 is the ticket.

9503 Roof luggage rack with straps for skis
9505 Roof rack
9506 Leather straps for roof rack
9507 Roof mounted ski rack
9508 Roof rack for Targa

Actually I was thinking about something that would allow me to have the rack on and the roof off.

I would not think the targa roof would be strong enough to mount the rack to it alone. So I was thinking there maybe something out there that would mount to the targa bar and a pillar.

Maybe wild dream and something I need to come up with.

Dr. Osidak:

If you figure this out, let us know. I can't picture how you'll get any side to side rigidity without using the roof, not to mention I would think the wind buffeting into the rear seat would be quite bad with the roof off and stuff up above.

fwiw, with the roof off, my 8 year old says its pretty windy in the back seat at freeway speeds but much more manageable around town. (Not that he ever balks at taking the Porsche anywhere, except when the temps are really high (lack of A/C)).

just my .02

Didn't think about buffeting with a rack. Right now my son doesn't seem to mind highway speeds as long as the windows are ~ halfway up.

Anyway to look up those part numbers

There was a roof rack to fit with or without targa roof in place.
Front rack installed to rain gutters as a good old fashioned rack but at an angle caused by sloping gutters on 911 targa.
Rear installed with 2 scrwes each side to targabar (screwholes is plugged by plasticplugs behind targa bar seal)
As a targa owner I have been looking for this for some time. I have seen a set for sale on Ebay once but sold for, for my money, too much.
I guess it's one of those thing, if you want it, buy it when you see it, because they are so seldom seen for sale.
