Front Oil Scoop Cooler

Does anyone here use one of these on an SC?

Scoop

Is it a less expensive option for truly trying to get the trombone to perform a bit better. As summer approaches I'm just trying to keep my temps down a bit, I'm not massively overheating but even just 10 deg. Not ready to drop $600 on a carrera cooler yet, my auto budget is fairly blown for the year other then routine....

BTW just found out my '95 volvo needs a new ABS pump $1500 new, $675 junkyard special.....

Another alternative, especially for low speed cooling, is to install a small Spal fan to force more air over the trombone tubes. The cooler scoop is probably more effective at higher speeds.

Is this a driver or a track-only car? You lose the right front marker lights with these scoops, which I don't think is legal on the road...

The tuba does not get much better cooling by air flowing over it. It does not have much surface area, there are no fins. Most the heat is lost with convection and radiation.

You can get a Mocal oil cooler kit for under $300. There is a tech article here on PP on how to install it. I'd do that and leave my side indicator alone.

Adam, about 6 weeks ago, I installed oil lines and a trombone oil cooler. At the track, I was running around 250 degrees in 70 degree weather. This was no different from when I had no front oil cooler at all. A week ago, I installed a Carerra cooler and took the car to the track. My temps were no higher than 215 degrees. No fan, by the way. I would strongly suggest you just bite the bullet and get a good oil cooler.

...or write yourself an ad for a used 27 row brass oil cooler. My temps at the track stay below 220 without a fan. Was that way with the 83 and now the 80.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll save the $90.

This is a street only car for now high speeds on the highway. I've been looking at the $300 mocal system, just need to save some pennies right now.... d@#n volvo....

I have the Scoops on both drivers and passengers Side, never been an issue with the law. Cant comment on the effectiveness with a trombone but it does a great job getting more air through a radiator Style.

I've got the scoop on the passenger side only. Never had an issue with the law.

It only works when you are moving. Combined with a blocking air dam under the cooler, it works well.

But it's important to point out that you have a radiator style cooler, unlike Adam's trombone.

Don't waste your mony on a scoop to the trombone...Worthless.

Wait of bite the bullet on a radiator style cooler and add a fan to that cooler.

Yep, frustrating how just a 10degree outside temp (high 60s yesterday to high 70s today) diff leads to engine temps over 200. Normally in spring, fall and when I have it on the road during the winter temp just sits where it should, slightly below first while line ~190, now in just a short 5 mile hop during lunch its just over the line towards 205....

Best to worst effective cooler solutions:

Carerra cooler w/fan
28 brass cooler
Carrera cooler w/o fan
compact cooler
then all the other solutions, scoop, collar, lines.

I picked up a perfect 28 row brass cooler for 2 bills a couple weeks ago. They're out there, just post a WTB ad.

You've heard it. Don't waste your time.

If you must have a scoop, get some fiberglass material and build a scoop of sorts to pick up air from Under the cooler and force it upwards. Don't think any of this would make a significant difference with the trombone though.

I know you must save the $ but, heat damage will run you way over the $300 for the mocal.

Been there, ended up getting a turbatrol (lemke) way back when which was not sufficient and then pairing that with a rather large (20 x 6") radiator style earls montend in the front.

Needless to say, I don't have temp issues since!. If had to do it again, I'd go perhaps for the $300 mocal and save the change!

If funds are a little tight now, purchase a fan as I suggested earlier. You'll eventually appreciate it with any fender-mount cooler. You might even try fabricating some sheet metal in back of the trombone cooler to create some turbulence in the air flow from the fan. Might help a little. Even 10 degrees helps.

I'd like to make a slight modification to GrindingGear's "best-to-the-worst" list. If placement is no object, I'd vote for a front-mounted cooler (in valence or front bumper) at the head of the list (no fan necessary). Of course, a front bumper change would be necessary. I base my suggestions on the needs of a 3 liter SC engine operating in warm to hot climates. If you have a modified 3.2 or larger engine, then the configuration might change a little (twin coolers).

temps

Adam,

I have one of the cooler scoops installed on a 78 SC in conjunction with a large Lemke oil cooler . The scoop did help lower temps. I never see above 215 except on 90 degree plus days sitting in traffic.
At the track I see 225 after a hard session. The biggest drop in oil temps i noted was switching to synthetic oil.
