Embarassing Question...
 

I'm having trouble removing the yellow oil cap. I'm giving it a good counter-clockwise twist, but it isn't budging. Any advice on how I could get it off?

Mine was hard to turn the first time I checked the
oil after buying the car. just try harder. I ended up using
channel locks to remove the cap.(lefty loosey).

Mine seems to have a child protector cap feature. First I have to press down a little bit, then turn to the left.

BTW -- do not overfill the oil. Oil should be checked with the car running, parked on level ground, and warm. The gauge in the cockpit should read about halfway, as should the dipstick. If you overfill, you'll get billowing clouds of black smoke when you drive, which is embarrassing (not like I know from personal experience, honest). Not being able to get the cap off because the last guy to put that sucker on was a gorilla? That's not that embarrassing, really, in the grand scheme of things. :)

...Had the same problem yesterday. I used an adjustable wrench on the fin that is on the top of the cap. It worked fine. My mechanic is a gorilla. Right now I'm struggling with trying to get the fan nut off so that I can adjust my v-belt. Yikes! This sucker is on there! Any hints? I already used a pipe to extend the leverage on the wrench with no results.

Thanks for the info... I still can't get it off, but am going to go to an auto parts store now to see if they sell one of those circular clamps to see if that will do the job.

Using too much force on these nuts and bolts isn't fun,can cost you lots of $$$$.O btw has your Gorilla mechanic friend ever heard of Torque wrench :rolleyes:

When I first checked my oil after getting the cap off finally
I ended up removing 2 quarts just to get it down to the full mark.
The PO said when I was looking at the car that it takes
alot of oil to fill it, like 15 or 16 quarts.:eek:

Do you shut off the engine to add the oil?

I am always afraid my sunglasses or something will end up in the fan. I shut off the car to add the oil, but have it running and warm to check it.

If you change the oil yourself, do some research, the "101 Projects for your Porsche" book is pretty good.

They say start with 9-quarts drive a while and keep adding untill full. Out of the 13.7 quart capacity I was only able to add 11 quarts.

use a strap wrench, a strap type jar opener, or better -- make your mechanic loosen it -- he breaks, he buys.

I just went to the autoparts store and went to their back garage and one of the guys there was nice enough to get it open with a big monkey wrench. I tried mine at home, but my monkey wasn't big enough. I checked my oil only to find out that the level was right in the middle of the dots... oh well, I suppose I'll add oil next time.

So when I went to the auto store, I picked myself up a small Coleman air compressor for $15. I don't have the OEM porsche compressor so I figured that I better buy one to save myself if I ever get a flat.

My question is - where did the OEM compressor go? There does not appear to be too much room under the carpet in the front.

There ya go -- get a bigger monkey. :) That's what I need, is a bigger monkey....
