O-ring on shift tube

There is a trick on the G50 tranny's where you put an O-ring somewhere on the shift tube (to prevent rattling).

Does this work on the earlier transmissions also (915, 911 types)?

And if so, what size O-ring and where do you put it?

Also, beside the ball cup, what else should I do when I have the shift tube out?
