that clock on top of the dash looks like they forgot it during initial design

It's not just the clock. It's the whole look of the interior. It has absolutely NO brand identity. Remove the Porsche crest and it could be anything from Skoda, Audi, VW or some other car maker. And look at the steering wheel oh no oh no oh no

I'll never be in the market for one of these as I don't think I'll live long enough to allow the depreciation to bring the car down to my price range. That said:
The clock on the top of the dash relieves what would be a large expanse of Ho-Hum. Let us try to imagine a boost guage in its place! The steering wheel is awkward, if only because most other lines in the car seem to be trying to place visual masses low. (I think this is also the reason the tail lights have the dark portion as a base and the clear portion atop) Note the repeated triangular and trapizoidal shapes of the instrument clusters and vents. Broad surface down in each case giving the feeling of a stable platform. The wheel reverses this, causing it to jar in its surroundings. Yes it could be better, but which of us could make it so? Les

Sorry.... Just don't like it at all... How about this?
![]() or this? ![]() I think Porsche needs to take a few steps back for styling... It does get the Porsche styling back a bit compared to the 996 but does it do it enough to set it apart from the others? At least I didn't make reference to the Pinto.... lol

The 997 follows the styles of most modern day cars. The problem with that, IMO, is that the shape of the 911 has been around for a long time and is not a modern shape. It is hard to get the classic look out of peoples minds. That is why the retro look is doing so well right now.
The 997 is too nice of a car to do what I want to do with a sports car and too small of a car to be my nice car. If you look at the buyers of the 997, you see different types of people buying them then the types that bought 911's in the 70's and 80's. It is not the drivers car it used to be. |

What is it that Aston MArtin does with their cars to make them more modern but at the same time keep the classic look, and it gets better year after year?

Hey, at least the rear flares are back. It doesn't look like a Ford Probe anymore.

20 years ago, even without all the sophisticated 3d CAD technology of today, the designers/engineers of Porsche did a great job in designing a great looking car.
these days, it's nothing but disappointments. |

I believe the cars look 2-D because of the use of cad equipment. Old school design methods would yield classier lines and bodies.

Hmm, SRT4 and GTO, I don't think so!! I just can't even fathom that. The SRT4 is definitely made to appeal to the kids, I'm not old at all, and I am only 16 or so at heart, but I just don't get this kind of crap.
And the GTO. I don't get that either. There's nothing retro about it. I guess it's just a frt engine rear driver, nothing special about it I'd rather have a '94-96 Impala SS. That was a cool car. At least Pontiac didn't plastic plate the sides of the thing like they've been doing to all of their other cars for the last 15 years.

from the front it looks New Beetleish. Does it have a little flower vase on the dash?
still not as bad as the 996

I think the new car looks stunning.
They brought back some of the classic 911 elements - like the round headlights and the engine grille, and wheel flares - while retaining some of the good parts of the 996. A Neon comparison? A Pontiac? That's a little backwards; those cars are imitating Porsche, not the other way around. Be reasonable in your comparisons.

I like it but...
IMO, the main problem with the 996 and 997s is the SLOPE of the windshield. Traditionally, from the 356 on through the 993s, the windshield slope was much more upright, much more straight up and down...like a roadster should be. Now, they have it sloped way back...just like every other car on the road. I wish they would change it. |

So when will we get a look at a wider Turbo version of the 997???
![]() And yes, I'm never satisfied if anyone was wondering. Maybe it could be ordered with a "clock delete" option. I still wish they had incorporated the current C4S red bar into the 997s tail.
