Yellowbird, thanks. i pulled up the first string and i saw a picture of my lights which are h1. now, ive got to ask if these hella headlights can be used. i dont believe so.

Do the relay system first, THEN the H4/brighter bulb upgrade, or smoke will eminate from your dash and things won't work so good anymore.

isaacyoon,
The H1's and H4's are very similar in looks. The difference should be this: The H1's used two H1 bulbs in the shell. There should be 5 screws in the outer trim ring. One of them will be a retainer screw and the others will be adjustment screws. The outer trim ring will be chrome if stock. There can also be a trim ring mounted over the chrome retaining ring. Generally this is painted the same color as the body. The H4's will have 3 screw holes in the trim ring. The trim ring could be chrome or black primer (for future body paint color) There also could be a body trim ring on top of the headlight ring. This is generally painted the same color as the body. The H4's will use a single H4 bulb with three prongs on the rear. Two of the three screws are for adjustment and the third is a retainer. The primary reason for using a headlight relay is not for the wiring. It's for the turn signal switch. All of the headlight current goes throug the contact points in this switch. This switch has very small contacts with small contact areas. They burn out regularly. The switches are expensive. It pays to insert a headlight relay into the circuit if just to save the turnsignal switch! This is one of those not so wonderful Porsche engineered things. You will find others. Good luck, David Duffield |
