Guards Red from a Spray Can?
Does anybody know of a spray paint brand and color code/description that is reasonably close to Guards Red? Something that I can get at an Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Checker Autoparts or the like.
I'd like to paint some new rockers for my race car. Given the amount of abuse they take from rocks/etc, I'd prefer not to get them professionally painted...it would be a waste of time/money! As long as it looks good from 20 feet, I'll be happy.

Paintscratch.com sells pre-mixed spray cans in the correct color. I think they charge about 30 bucks.

You can go to an automotive paint store where they sell these small aerosal propelled paint bottles. You just load the paint in the bottle and spray.

See my prev. post re Guards Red paint for model cars -- at a model shop -- Testor's I think.
Be advised that red weathers a lot and changes "color" -- some have said there were several "colors" of GR too. |

You can also go to your local hobby shop and buy Testors in a spray can as well as the little bottles for touching up knicks. Cheap and matches well.

Completely by accident I discovered that a can of generic K-Mart red enamel spray paint is a perfect match for guards red. If anyone is interested I will take a picture of the can. Right after I sprayed my rear bumper I scratched it. I didn't want to mix up some more paint and thought what the hell this K-Mart paint looks close. The spot I painted is on the right side of the license plate. Can you spot it? I can't:

At PepBoys, they have a paint that is called VW Toronado Red that crossmatched with Porsche red in their book. It is very close and I have used it for various low visibility areas like fenderwalls and trunks.

You can also use www.towerpaint.com. They mix to color code or to match a sample. Their spray tip is also the best in the business and they're cheaper than PaintScratch.com.

Kurt,
I believe the paint you are referring to is called "Krylon" Banner Red and costs around $3 or $4 a can at K-mart or Walmart. Kevin 72 911T/E |

The problem with any aerosol spray off the shelf is that they have no hardeners, if they did the paint would solidify in the can. Thats why would strongly recommend using one of these spray bottles you can buy at an automotive paint store. Its basically a jar or bottle that you load the paint, reducer and catalyst hardener into, just the same way you would load a paint gun. An aeresol cap is fitted over the top and voila! you have a mini portable spray gun. If you don't use a paint with a catalyst hardener it will never set properly, at least for months and months, and you will not be able to sand and buff which is a necessary part of the process to achieve a satisfactory result.
