Yup, it was in 1966. Porsche set up a press day with the car at Hockenheim and Gerhardt Mitter and "Hansi" Herrmann was doing the driving. It sounds like they put an S motor into the car(s) to avoid the wear-and-tear on the race motor. Even though the article is a bit light, personally I love the cover. As far as I know, this article was not reprinted in any of the Brooklands books, so unless you buy an old copy Road & Track, I doubt that you'll find it anywhere but here.

We all have stories about missing the deal of a lifetime on a historically significant car. Mine disappeared when I thought $19K was too much for one. It was then, back in the late 70's.

John, just finally got around to reading this. Nobody these days writes like Henry Manney III. Rob Walker had the same talent for making you feel that you were there with him, but HM was funnier, i.e. the door blowing off as a result of the occupants breathing in unison.... and getting out of the pits on a stiff clutch with only a mild bit of ugga ugga...:D

I don't know about 550 Spyders for $4500, but here's a few that were listed in that issue (keep in mind that a 906 had a list price of $11,250...)
