I bought these Pioneer 4x6 3ways for $88 at Best Buy - only as a good filler and I am very pleased with how they sound.
Yes - 3 ways in a 4x6 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1153318290.jpg |
I'm very pleased with my ADS plates on the rear shelf.

smuggler's box = box under that lid in the trunk where steering linkage is - often used for a/c or aux. heater

I disagree replace the rear speakers and use them along with the front's. In most situations 2 front 2 rear speakers give you much more flexibility in getting the stereo to sound best to your ear. |
I currently do not have rear speakers in my Targa. I'm thinking of small 6x9 boxes for the rear footwell to fill the air.

MB Quarts, Boston Acoustics & Focals
I have MB's in my doors and BA in the rear deck with no sub and am very pleased with the sound - even with the windows down and sunroof open. |
I like MAS's suggestions.
Lots of people like Focals, MB Quart, BA. I currently have Infiniti Kappa oversize in rear (in my own opinion speakers were meant to be round and have huge magnets), Infinity Kappa in the front with a ADS separates. I really really REALLY think that for people with sensitive ears and a love of music, the only way to go is with a bi-amped subwoofer enclosure in place of the rear seats, and if you're really into fine tuning, then a tri-amp setup with a three way crossover with the bridge disconnected. Check out Soundstream Reference amps before buying speakers. The brand of amp that you buy will determine sound quality of the speakers. |
bi-amped subwoofer enclosure in place of the rear seats
.. an xlnt way to make quality bass .. also an xlnt way to add wt. just where it does not belong in a 911 used as a sports car You have to make a decision: sport car or luxo-boat, or somewhere in between. |
Randy,
You remove the rear seats, belts, etc. then replace with a subwoofer. Have you ever actually weighed the difference? I'd be hard pressed to say that there is more than a 10 pound difference, and that is using 3/4" plywood for maximum sound imaging. My dog weighs more than that and I can't tell the difference in performance when she stays at home. You'd have to hire a team of scientists and use laser timing equipment to know if there is 10 pounds more weight in your car. What's the point in that? Anorexia is a disease of the mind. It is an eating disorder that eventually destroys the body. I might suggest that if 20 pounds converts what was the worlds fastest production sports car in 1984 (Car and Driver, Feb. 1984, Pg. 34 "Porsche 911 Carrera) that can do 0-16 in 5.3 seconds flat into a "luxo-boat" then you might have a similar mental disorder. Have you ever actually been given a trophy for shaving a tenth of a second off your weekly grocery run, or do you race your car for money? I say stand back, take a look at what is important in life: enjoying your car as a true GT car and not some psyedo imaginary race car, or thinking that you're Michael Schumacher getting paid $30 Million per year to win the World Drivers Championship? |
It'll be more than 10.
But like I said, everybody has to make a decission. Some won't have even a radio in their car (not me). My view is that if you are getting near Lexus level, you should own a Lexus. |
Randy,
I don't begrudge you deleting your radio, speakers, AC, carpets, and anything that you see fit. On the other hand, let's say I'm wrong on the weight difference. Let's multiply it by a factor of 3. 30 pounds is a bit less than a "Lexus level" weight gain. I can still have practical driveability while enjoying breathtaking performance, that is the point of a 911. You won't see me turning one of the world's best ever GT cars into a Third World taxicab, but that's just silly ol me. |
Is it possible to remove the forward map pocket thats underneath the door grab bar so I don't need to go with 6.5, mid & tweet?
This way a nice two way component would work best I think. I'd rather not destroy the door pocket since I know they're so expensive to replace, but this isn't ever going to be a concours car so if I can remove the pocket gracefully, I think that would work best. Anybody ever do this? |
Joe,
I agree completely with you, but that door pocket can accomodate some truely huge drivers. And the tweeter should be placed high anyway forward of the light switch. Remember the inside of the door has a window crank, light switches, etc. The door pocket delete also eliminates a useful protection barrier for the driver. |

Anyone ever get a 4 "mid driver, a 5.5 mid bass, and a tweeter in a ealy 911 door?
Theres this one on eBay that is going for little money. |
"deleting your radio, speakers, AC, carpets"
Actually, I have a radio, speakers, and carpeting in my car. Everyone has to make a decision on the dgree of compromise they will make in creature comforts for lower wt. However, one can have very good sound and still not overburden the car too much. e.g. the sub can be mounted as far forward as possible and low to the ground - search on the user name bell. One can also build a sub box out of light but rigid materials -- Al hexcell looks interesting to me. Or you can abandon the bottom octave or two and have sound like a British Min-monitor (the first was the Rogers LS3a, there are many manfs. now). PS - by sub I mean car stereo language not home audio. i.e. 80 Hz or so, not a real sub, which would be 20 maybe 30 Hz. |

I have to say, polk has not impressed me in recent times..
I'd say, MB Quart, Infinity, and Focal is probably the best But in 6x4, your pretty much only using the tweeters, as they won't produce any good bass. But as Low frequency sounds aren't directional, aslong as you have good bass up front, it won't be that noticeable. I personally use MB Quart Fronts, and have a pair of infinity kappa 6x4 which i don't think i will ever install. I'd sell them to you, but i think postage will be a bit much from Australia NOTE: sound quality is subjective. Some people prefer the very bright tweeters of Infinity. I prefer MB Quart. Hope i haven't upset anyone. |
I have 5 1/4 in the doors with separate tweeter and two 6x9 in the rear shelf on my Targa. I used the replacement rear shelf panel made by Appbiz. Have two amps in the trunk that will be moved under the front seats soon. No matter how much you spend on speakers, it never sounds as good as a finely tuned flat six with a performance exhaust. Especially revving from 6000-7000 rpm in second gear through a highway overpass. The echo is real music. Mine is a 2.2S MFI through SSI exchangers and the bursch triple glass pack that has been Jet-Hot silver coated.

Agree that MB Quart, Infinity, and Focal are probably the best, and are way better than Polk.
There is probably some hyper-expensive speaker out there we don't know about... |
