How best to find/search for good used 911s...
 

Sorry for the bazillion questions all of a sudden but the thought of finally getting a 911 for myself has me all a twitter... But how to best go about it? What's the best way to find good used 911s for sale? Along the lines of:

* 1988/89 911 Carrera 3.2L G50 Coupe, or maybe
* 1993/94 964 Carrera 2, or maybe
* 1996/98 993 Carrera, Carrera S, or Carrera 4S (maybe possible to find one certified pre owned...), or maybe
* 2002+ 996 3.6L Carrera or Carrera 4S (probably be some good ones available certified pre owned...)

How far a field should I be willing to look. Yes I know that a THOROUGH pre purchase inspection is a must. Ebay seems crazy. And traveling just to look at a particular car seems expensive, difficult and risky, though a nice road trip home could be fun.

Any thoughts? How does one go about finding good cars? It's not quite like looking through the classifieds for a nice used Civic or Accord.

I mean, beyond ads in Excellence and the local papers and here of course, where to look, how best to go about it?

Cars in Excellence will be way overpriced (as a rule). Look at Auto-trader.com, e-bay motors, cartrackers.com, carsearch.com... the list goes on and on. Make it a daily routine and be patient.

Have you tried http://www.rennlist.com/ ? It's similar to this BBS but their ads have more 'newer' cars.

First what do you want? You listed a 16 year range and 4 different generations of 911s

Yes, I realize that I need to narrow it down and decide what I "want" and "want" to afford.

Older cars: Much less depreciation, but more maintenance/issues, simpler, starting at around $20K
Newer cars: WAY more depreciation, and potentially less maintenance/issues, WAY more complicated, some starting at $50K and up.

At least I've rulled out anything older than say 1987, so I've narrowed the field by some amount there....

I think I would look around in papers for twons south of Spokane and in Idaho -- you could maybe search them online. More effort (esp. in out of the way places) will yield lower prices.

I'd bet Moscow, ID and Pullperson (foremerly Pullman) would be good places -- you know some of those profs had to have 911s and they are hard to sell in such small towns.....
