Engine is out - Now the fun starts!

Well, Steve and I got the engine out this afternoon. This was a reasonably straight forward process, but we did have the mandatory set back. I managed to twist the alllen key in one of the CV Joint bolts - DOH! We eventually got it out, but things were not looking good for a while.

With the engine out, it seems pretty evident why I had overheating issues. There must be nearly 15-20 years of built up oil around the back of the engine covering almost everything including the oil cooler. Its also very nicely baked on. Leaks are evident around the breather hose/seal and oil switch, rocker shaft seals, rear main seal and numerous oil hoses. I have many, many hours of cleaning ahead of me.

I have a couple of questions (surprised?):

1) Have noticed that the fuel injectors are loose within the housing in the inlet manifold. This can't be good, can it?
2) Can I remove the CIS unit without too much drama? Is there anything I should be wary of?

Thanks in advance.

Sheldon:

I had one of my injectors loose like that. Sure enough, the plug on that cylinder was pretty darn white - running lean. You want to replace them while they are out!

The CIS is supposed to come off as a unit. I skipped it. You can clean things reasonably well, unless the fan blew oil over your cylinders from the top and you need to get the shroud off.

The injectors should not be loose - there are plastic inserts that go into the manifolds and are supposed to seal, along with the fat injector o-rings.

Check 101 Projects - I think there's some info in there...
