Project 73 911 R/RS -- Week 7, part 2
too many pics, so here is part 2
Moving on to the body, this is going to be fun. Front fenders are carbon R's from GT-Racing, picked up on this board 2 years ago! Hood is Renspeed. Fenders are excellent, and initial fit is much better than could have been expected. Definitely not bolt on, but very close. Hood is good, but definitely warped, which ought to be expected with such a broad area of glass. Hinge and front mounts should pull it all in place. 2 critical tools: palm sander and dremel with ball cutting head. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1084762839.jpg I mounted the hood first. Easy job, left hinges and mounts loose, then wrangled the hood in place, then crawled up through gas tank hole to tighen. Doing that about 10 times plus sanding at the rear edge provide decent first draft results. With the hood aligned and old doors mounted for reference, I turned to the left fender. After 30 minutes of trial fitting and sanding down the vertical mounting strip and a few other areas, realized that the rear 2 upper mounts and front corner mount make it all come together. Gently fitting, pulling, carving (Dremel) the rear holes over 5-7 successions produced good initial results. It's much easier to keeping pulling and grinding than grinding too much at one time! Once these 2 mounts are hooked up, the rest of the fender can be easily moved into place. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1084763121.jpg A pic of the upper seam. This doesn't look great, does it? Well, considering that the door is a solid 1/4 inch low in the opening, and the vertical is a nice consistent 1/8 inch gap all the way to the bottom, this was a good place to stop for the day. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1084763255.jpg A pic of the front end. the pass side front hood needs to be "pressed down" to fit properly and line up. A rubber hook will take care of that. My goal with the body work is to take each piece in stages, then hole areas in stages. So, get the front pieces on, then get them aligned, then refit each so each time making smaller incremental mods to make it all work together. We'll see... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1084763409.jpg |
